How to get better concert recordings with a device phone?

Folks,

I'd like to get better concert recordings with a device phone.

Can anyone suggest what the technique might be?  I guess

we can buy a supplemental microphone that plugs right

into the phone jack, except when you dont have a phone jack.
Anyone there with experience?

I am not looking for bootleg quality, just usable. Most built-in

mics seem to have NO bass response.  My Nikon

D800 can do it well, but it's hard to get that in.

Thanks

Steve Zee

A better external mic is the only answer. What sort of phone do you have that hasn't got a headphone/mic jack? Is it an iThingy? If so you will have to get yourself one of their proprietary adaptors to allow external phones/mics to plug in I'm afraid.

But if you want quality recordings then a proper portable digital recorder is the best way forward.

Yeah, but you almost certainly can't smuggle those in to make illegal recordings either!

yeah but my d800 records so well that I know it is possible

to come out of there with something adequate somehow.
Now I have an iPhone5 and I have gathered that there are

plug in mics that could do the job, tho how do we know

which ones will pick up bass well?  And soon it will be

time to upgrade but they dont have jacks, the new ones.
