How to turn music into 1980s, 1990s, or Atari video game style music?

Hi guys! I was trying to turn an mp3 file and a wave file into an atari video game style music in Adobe Audition. I did this by lowering the bitrate to 8 bit and the sample rate to 16000, but it didn't work. It was still the same. The only difference is that I hear a noise in the music's background. How can I turn the music into an atari style music?

Please help me!

WarriorStrikeforkill964,

I found this thread on Reddit to be informative. It sounds like the only way to get the exact results you want is to play a new version of the tune using primitive synths. There are plug-ins and other methods that are OK but not as convincing. See what you think and report back.

I am sorry I am really new to these type of stuff. What is an MIDI? What is a VST synth? I have red what Kevin recommended in reddit, but I just want a clearer answer.

Ryclark, what do you mean 'original sound generators'? Is that another software? If so I want a safe and legal one.

I mean the Atari console that the games music was originally made to play on. Have you read the link that Kevin gave in his post above. That explains it all.

I agree. Just using bit and sample rate reduction and filtering on a modern audio recording is unlikely to make it sound like an original 8 bit 1970's synth sound. You need to go back to the original sound generators.
