MacOS 10.15 (Catalina) breaks Levelator. How to use Audition's Match Loudness panel

I've seen a few tweets and comments this morning about trying to use Audition to adjust loudness as the MacOS 10.15 Catalina update breaks the Levelator app they've relied upon. Here's a quick look at how to achieve near-similar results in Audition very quickly.

Using the Match Loudness panel, located under the Window menu, drag and drop the files you wish to loudness correct into the panel. Click the little Magnifying Glass icon to enable automatic analysis of files as they're dropped. Click the Match Volume Settings button to expose the settings adjustments.

In the screenshot below, the top file, "ae vo.wav" is the original, untouched recording. The middle file, "ae vo output.mp3" is the output from Levelator. And the bottom file "ae vo Copy.mp3" is the results of Audition's Match Loudness. (Yes, I could have selected better filenames, thank you.)

You can see that Levelator targets -19LUFS as its default target, with a true peak around -0.5dB. Take a look at the settings I've configured, which should get your content pretty close to the same results. Click Run, and/or setup the Export Settings to automatically generate a copy of the leveled file. Once this is setup once, you don't need to change it every time.

Is it identical? Nope. Levelator may apply some compression and additional limiting. But it should sound very similar and ensure that your content is within spec for most publishing platforms or broadcast requirements.

Audition has the handy Essential Sound panel that can help with compression and more. But Auphonic (web app and desktop app) has long been superior to Levelator.
