Question

Mic hiss only in Audition, not OBS etc

Hello.

I am recording using a cheap USB mic (Snowball Ice). If I use OBS Studio or anything other than Audition to record, the latent noise/hiss is minimal. However, if I record using Audition, the background hiss/noise is overwhelming, as loud as rushing water. If I switch to my Jabra Mic within Audition, there is hardly any hiss at all..

UPDATE:

I restarted and went back and tried again. Firstly, in Audacity there is no hiss. I then thought perhaps of recording in a single audio track, rather than the default multichannel podcast setup. That fixed it too - in single audio recording there is no hiss. So to clarify - the only time the hiss returns is in the multichannel recording within Audition. Weird..

I know I can reduce it post-edit, but I really think something must be wrong.

Can anyone suggest settings I might have incorrect? I've exhausted Google and YouTube 🙂

Thanks.

Liam

OK I just solved my own problem. It turns out that Speech Volume Leveller was applied (I don't know why as I just created a Podcast multichannel from scratch). As soon as I turned it off, everything became good and the hiss disappeared. I am new to all this so no clue as to what lesson I learned 😉

Okay, the lesson you need to learn is very simple; under no circumstances use the Podcast template! We've been saying this for ages now - if you don't know exactly what you are doing, then it will be an almighty hindrance, because it introduces things into your session that you really don't need - as you are discovering. You will be much better served using the default Multitrack template, which will give you six vanilla tracks to record into, and without any irrelevant effects added. Then, if you need to alter or add anything, you can do so in a manner that suits your podcast, rather than somebody else's one.
