Question

MIDI needs to be integrated

Adobe Audition is in desperate need of an update to support MIDI recording which could catapult this amazing software to new heights allowing it to be in consideration for music recording studio use.

Iam baffled as to why this feature has been left out for so long. Are there any plans?

Hi,

as Steve said already Midi as a "Audio Input and Output" Option to connect a MIDI-Keyboard to produce Sounds will likely not happen. One other reason is the licensing of that Technology. I tried for years to get that Feature integrated and there are many articles in Uservoice for Audition, but that never gonna happen.
However you can use Midi-Controllers so some kind of Midi "integration" is there, but only for some Midi-Controllers, not instruments. Also other DAWs other manufacturers are much more advanced here. From a financial point of view, it would hardly make sense here to invest a lot again and to want to go against the other big players in the industry. So lets use it as it is. Thats it.

The reasons are mainly two-fold. The big ticket users (the ones with seats into the millions, and yes they exist) don't want it, so there is no real financial incentive to add it. A relatively small number of home users wouldn't exactly 'catapault it to new heights', whatever you might think. The second reason is that Adobe, basically a visual arts company, know fulll well that they'd forever be playing catch-up - it's really not their game. And what those big-ticket users do want is what Syntrillium was purchased for in the first place - better integration into the video production process. And it might surprise you to learn that there is actually some resistance to Audition having MIDI capabilities from some music producers working in the industry - they suspect that a lot of companies might well try to do everything themselves in-house, and that they'd subsequently lose work. If you ask around the industry, you'll find that a heck of a lot of recording studios use Audition anyway - for them it makes an excellent mastering tool, although often they won't admit it. The reason for this is snobbishness; they don't like the idea of using anything that had its beginnings in shareware (Cool Edit).

There are others, but those are the principal reasons. Even if there were any plans to introduce it, Adobe wouldn't make them public, but I think it's unlikely after all this time. It has been suggested that reinstating Rewire might get around most of the issues mentioned, but that hasn't happened either. That would be a good solution, because it wouldn't mess up the layout of the software - another thing that happens with MIDI-based systems - also another thing that the video users wouldn't want.

So no, Audition is not in desperate need of anything like that. If it was, it would have been added years ago. Indeed, it had MIDI (after a fashion...) in Audition 3 and it was removed, as it was regarded as an undeveloped beta feature. If you search the forum, you'll find that this has been discussed ad nauseum - it rears its head every few months but nothing changes as a result - for reasons already alluded to.
