Question

Pbm with audio unwanted ducking

Hi. This is my problem.

Track 1, voiceover.

Track 2, FX.

Sometimes, when the sound of the FX kicks in (a broken glass, for instance), it ducks the voiceover slightly. What am I doing wrong? I have not defined ducking parameters or anything else, for that matter.

Thanx!

Hi,

do you by any chance have any Effects opened that could cause that? Hope that helps.

What template are you using? If by any chance it's the Podcast template, then start again using the default one and see if the same thing happens...

Thanks for your quick answer. Not sure if I'm using any template whatsoever. How do I check?

I should explain a little more about templates, as there's a little ambiguity here. This is because there are two types of template - the first one is the one we've already mentioned, which is capable of preloading effects onto a track, and if you don't have the effects window for the track open, you could easily miss them. In the case of the Podcast template these can be confusing, and almost invariably wrong. For anybody beginning with podcasts, they can lead you astray completely and in my considered opinion that template should be unceremoniously ditched. Unfortunately, without actually inspecting the effects racks of the individual channels, you can't easily tell which template has been used on a track (although it might be possible by looking at the code for the session .xml file - we'd need SuiteSpot to confirm that though).

But there is also another type of template, and those are the ones in the Essential Sound system. These are referred to as 'templates' in the Session Info box. I can see why, as they have a similar funtion, but I don't think it's helpful to have the same name for both, as they operate differently. With these ones, it's possible to select clips, and by choosing one of the types available, you can predetermine how it reacts against other clips. You can adjust the individual parameters of each type, and there are also some presets you can use. One of these gives you ducking...

But in order to do that, you'd need to have selected a sound type.

Possibly the easiest way of telling what's actually happening in your session is for you to upload the session file into a reply (don't need any audio with it) and let us have a look at it. It would then be a lot easier to determine what is or isn't happening.

Great. There you go. Thank you very much!
