Question

Quickly compare multiple VO takes in context

I often work with VO files that come to me as a .wav in which there are multiple takes of certain words or phrases that are recorded sequntially... in other words, the talent simply repeats the phrase or word with a different inflection, sometimes as many as 5 times. I have been cutting the segments and moving them to a new track and aligning them (see image), but I cannot seem to figure out a faster way to jump between takes than soloing and "un-soloing" or muting and unmuting. I set up a loop so it is just the immediately preceding and following few words, but it is still hard to manage to seamlessly swap which is played.  I think it's called punching, but I'm not really sure? Either way, this is a huge time suck, and honestly I'm never sure if I'm getting the best combinations because I can't do a quick compare in context.

Any suggestions?

Punching works by having the clips you want to select from stacked on top of each other on one track, and selecting the one you want to listen to - only the one on top plays. The quickest way to reorder the clips is to right-click on the top one, and select 'bring clip to front' and a list of all the stacked clips is given - you select the one you want. Does help if they all have unique identifiers though...

"having the clips you want to select from stacked on top of each other on one track,"

And how would I go about making that happen? How do you layer multiple clips into one track?

You drag them and place them there, on top of each other.
