Hi, I'm new to Audtion, jumping over from using mostly Audacity.

I'm selecting at least 1 second of noise on a file in Multitrack, and the option to "capture noise print" is always greyed out.

Any help would be appreciated

Noise Reduction is destructive and as such can only be carried out in the Waveform view.

Hi,

What if Capture Noise Print is greyed out in the Waveform view?

You can only capture a Noise Print from a small selection of your audio file. So if Capture Noise Print is greyed out it probably means that you haven't selected a small enough sample from your audio. You only need a few seconds of the background noise without any foreground sound on it.

When I went from Effects / Noise Reduction / Capture Noise Print - is greyed out but when I went to Noise Reduction (Process) the I was able to Capture Noise Print.  This seemed like a fine work around but I'm not sure why the option doesn't work.  There was only a few seconds so I'm not sure but I guess its a non-issue.  Thanks for your time here!

Hello, I am in Waveform view and have ~2.5 seconds of my file selected (a selection that I would like to use as my Noise Print), yet I am still seeing the "Capture Noise Print" option greyed out.
I have also tried clicking the "Select Entire File" option and then narrowing that selection down to the 2.5 seconds of noise, but this does not work either.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Also, I am extremely new to Audacity, so I might be missing something basic. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm presuming that you mean Audition...

The mistake most people make is to try to capture noise prints without bothering to open the NR app first. If you happen to make a selection that the app considers to be, for instance, too short for the FFT size, then it simply won't capture it. It's important to realise that you absolutely don't have to capture the noise print first. You can open it, still make an appropriate selection and use it - without closing the app at all. Yes you get the big black message all over the display, but note carefully the bit I've circled:

Capture noise print.JPG

You can alter all the settings to be the way you want before making the selection, and I've never known this method of using it to fail - unlike trying to make a selection first, which can potentially lead to problems because of FFT sizes.

I'm also having an issue with NR in 14.2 on a M1 Mac.

I've used Audition to suck noise out of a speaker's voice for over a decade, with no problems. If I created a 'noise print', I could very easily sample a new selection and the 'capture noise print' option would not be greyed out. With 14.2, Once I set the noise print, I cannot change that sample, unless I quit the application and relaunch.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've used this function countless times and it simply does not work properly in 14.2.

Then again, Audition can't even manage *playback* in 14.2, which for an audio application seems like a pretty massive bug.

Then you have a faulty installation. If what you said was universally true, then everybody would be complaining, and they aren't. Initially, I'd suggest resetting your preferences.

This is quite helpful.

However, I'm still seeing issues. I have up to 10 seconds of track to select, and no matter how much I select, 'Capture Noise Print' stays grayed out... oops. Now it showed up. I don't know what made it work.

I was trying everything, especially what you said about keeping the app open. (Didn't know I could do that--thanks for the tip!) Then when I went back to check my math before posting, it was available again. I have run into 'not enough track selected' in the past, so I knew that wasn't my issue. Not sure what finally made it available, so I'm also confused by that, but it's working for now so I guess I won't worry about it!

Running Audition build 22.0.0.96 (active Creative Cloud subscription) on a 2019 iMac that I upgraded 2 days ago to macOS Monterey 12.0.1.

I am sorry ... I did not completely understand your answer. But that window was exactly, what I got. I have successfully made noise prints before. But yesterday, I was editing in Adobe Premiere, right clicked audio and automatically went over to Audition, which popped open, to work on audio over there (voice, interview). I was in wave form. When I tried to capture a noise print, it was always greyed out. And I got that window, you show, a lot. I gave up.

The replies in this thread - with the exception of this one - appear to make perfect sense. What 'context' do you want?
