Recorded favorites are useless because time is not adjustable.

Hi all.

I'm just trying to record a favorite to do one thing: normalize to a certain level. But it's useless because it insists on using absolute start and end times by default.

If I edit the favorite and select "relative" for the start and end of the actions, the values are percentages and aren't editable. The favorite doesn't seem to do anything.

WTF?  I'm assuming that the un-editability of the start and end percentages is a defect, but before I file a bug report I wanted to check.

The documentation says nothing about this, which is another defect.

This is in Audition 11.1 on Mac OS. Thanks for any insight.

Are you expecting the Favorite to act on just the selected part of a Waveform? In order for Relative to do this you have to have selected the whole of the audio waveform when recording the Favorite so that when you edit it to Relative instead of Absolute it selects 0% to 100% of the selected portion of audio.

I don't believe that this is a bug or a defect. It is just that there isn't any full documentation explaining how all this works in Audition.

Yes, I want it to act only on the selection. I consider this to be the sensible default; how many times do you want to perform the same action on an absolute range of samples over and over on arbitrary files? Once again, Adobe makes the most obscure possible scenario the default.

Then when you switch to "relative," the UI doesn't

A. Tell you what the percentage is OF.  Is it of the selection? The file?  See point C below for the significance of this.

B. Let you change the percentages. If these are significant, why aren't they editable?

C. Show correct info.  Apparently if you want the favorite to affect the whole current selection, the action has to say "relative" and be 0 to 100 percent.  But that's wrong; it doesn't affect the whole file. It only affects the selection.

This entire problem could have been avoided by simply having a third option in the drop-down list for the actions: "current selection." And this should be the default. I think it would be appropriate to say DUHHHHH here.

So, to work around this defective UI, you have to select your whole file, start the recording, perform actions, stop the recording, and then undo everything you did to the file. That is hokey as hell, and should have no place in a piece of production software.

    A) It is of the selection if there is one relative to the cursor, otherwise the whole audio.

    B) Because they can't be anything else if you have Relative selected to use the Favorite on a p[re selected portion of the file. But if your custom Favorite was recorded with only part of the file selected when in Absolute time mode the percentages of the selected proton of the file  will be shown when you change to Relative. It is quite likely that there is more to the code behind the customisation of Favorites that we don't know about.

    C) No it is not wrong when your selection is Relative since it shows the percentage of selected portion of the file to be operated on. Relative can be anywhere in the file, Absolute is at fixed times.

    But as mentioned above since there is no documentation on exactly how Favorite recording and editing works all the above is from odd bits of info gleaned from other users and a bit of trial and error experimentation.
