I have connected an ADAT interface to my RME Babyface, and while I can see (and hear) the inputs to the ADAT interface just fine, I cannot for the life of me understand how I am supposed to be able to record the eight inputs in Audition.
When I check the Audio Channel Mapping settings, all I can see as a default input for Audition is "Default Stereo Input".
I know I can record several tracks when I enter Multitrack mode, but I want to be able to record eight channels (or even the eight ADAT input channels mixed down to stereo input into Audition) in Waveform mode.
Is this possible?
I just launched Audacity, and immediately found out how I can record, say, ten channels into it. Input from ADAT interface is registering just fine.
Can anyone help me set up multitrack input into Audition?
Emrecs is correct--I missed that line. Recording more than a single stereo pair in Waveform view is not possible...and, I daresay, not desireable. In multitrack, recordings are put into a buffer which you then have to save manually at the end of each recording.
Waveform's main purpose is to perform destructive edits of effects not suitable for real time use in Multitrack.
Recording in multitrack is a far better idea--your files are recorded/saved direct to your project without extra saving, ther

First off, make sure you're using the proper RME driver (which I assume you are since it works in Audacity). You DO have to set the Device Type to ASIO and the device to the Baby Face under Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware.
Then, to set up tracks in multitrack, go to the input menu for each track (in the settings box at the left end of each track). Click on the drop down menu, select mono, and you should see a list of all the tracks (including ADAT) available through the Baby Face. Select the tracks in what ever order you want.
At this point, I'd suggest you Export your prepared session as a template to save having to go through this each time.

I suspect Bob, whose answer is entirely correct, did not read the above sentence! As you surmise, recording eight independent tracks in Waveform view is NOT possible.
Whether your interface provides a "stereo mixdown" in addition to the eight outputs you would need to check its manual, bearing in mind that such a mixdown will include "everything" from the 8 tracks, with no possibility of later "editing" of any one track.

Recording in multitrack is a far better idea--your files are recorded/saved direct to your project without extra saving, there's a recording backup feature so you can put a copy of everything you do on an external HDD or even the cloud--and, as you've found it's the only way to record multiple tracks which it's designed for.

Thanks for the help!
Considering it is possible to record in waveform mode, I can't really see the logic in limiting this recording functionality compared to what is possible in, say, multitrack mode - it would, for me, be much easier to just launch Audition, then record eight channels of ADAT immediately after.
Recording through multitrack is more hassle, but I have made a template, which will make this a little bit quicker.

The way that Audition records audio differs in the two views. In the Waveform view audio is recorded into a temporary file and not saved until you do so. In the Multitrack view audio is recorded straight to disc so a file is automatically opened when you start recording and closed when you finish. It is, therefore, much safer to record in the Multitrack view. So,at the moment, completely different audio file streaming engines are used when recording. To record multichannel files either into a temp store or to multichannel .wav files will need some completely new Audition code to do so.
