Recording won't play

I am new and practicing. I made a multitrack recording, then saved, then closed. When I came back and reloaded the recording, the recording will not play. I push the play button and the recording doesn't start playing. Why? What have I done,how do I fix it, and how do I not create the issue in the first place?

    The only reason that Audition's transport refuses to work (ie, it won't play) is because for some reason, it's not correctly connected to your sound device. You need to go to Edit>Preferences>Audio Hardware and make sure that your sound device is correctly allocated.

    There aren't many things that would disconnect it, but a common one of them is not having your System Sounds turned off. The OS then grabs your sound device and alters the settings on it, which trips Audition up a treat.
