I have a pair of Sony MDRXB950BT headphones that I connect to my computer via headphone cable and while the built in mic works for applications such as Fortnite and Discord it does not work in Audition. Even if I select the mic in option when plugging it in. Is there something wrong with the setting? Keep in mind I use the same headphone jack to connect my guitar amp to my computer and record in Audition; it picks up audio just fine.
But those are communication type programs. Did they work when the headphones were connected by the plug in lead? Does the plug have 3 or 4 connections on it? Windows Sounds settings can be different for comms devices. So you will have to find the settings that Windows uses for the audio with those apps and make sure that Audition can use the same ones.

As far as I can tell from the specifications those are basically Bluetooth headphones. As such the microphone will only be functional when used linked via Bluetooth to a smart phone as a communications device. Although a connecting lead is supplied I suspect that it is only for listening to playback of audio (that seems to be what the specs say), not for recording I'm afraid.

Not true. I have used the microphone in applications such as Discord and Fortnite.
