Waveform editor recording time skipping problem.

Hi,

I have a strange problem that just started. I'm using the latest version of Audition that I just installed last week on my PC (Windows 11).

When recording in Multitrack editor, everything works fine.  However, when recording a single track using the Waveform view editor, time goes bonkers. It skips about .8s at a time, stalls, then skips, then stalls. In 10 seconds, the recording time only shows like 0:02:23. And even w/ no sounds, the levels are moving up and down (just to like  -51dB). When I stop recording, it automatically gets selected (what I last recorded).

If I switch to Multitrack, everything works fine. No skipping, etc.  I tried reseting Audition using the "Shift Key" trick ... didn't help.

Any clues on how to fix it?  Thanks!

As you've probably realised, recording in Multitrack and Waveform views are considerably different. Multitrack records direct to disk, which is a much better, safer way to record. Waveform view, on the other hand, records via a temporary file, and your finished result isn't written to your final file until after you've finished recording. It's the way that Cool Edit Pro (Audition's predecessor) originally recorded, and it allows you to run 'undos' by nesting the temp files; every time you change something in a file in Waveform view, a new temp file is created. If you are editing a one hour file, these temp files get to take up a lot of space. By default, Audition uses the same temp space as the OS, and this is simply an appalling idea.

So even though it might not be the actual cause of your problem (although it could be), it's a good idea to relocate Audition's primary temp space to somewhere where the OS (which does weird things with the temp space allocation) isn't going to attempt to over-ride what's happening in the folder. Ideally, have a separate drive for temp files. On the DAW I use a SSD for this, and regard it as sacrificial - even though it hasn't actually ever crashed.

But the thing that makes me a bit more suspicious is the moving levels with silence, etc. This sounds more like a corrupted driver than anything else. You haven't said what sound device you are using, but have you checked to see if there's an updated driver for it? The other driver that would also alter the way things are displayed is the video driver, and in many ways, that's where I'd look first, as these are well-known for causing all sorts of problems.

That should be enough for the time being!

Thanks! Your clues helped me solve the problem. Completely uninstalled Audition (including all app data) and reinstall. BINGO!

FYI, my mic is a new NT-USB Mini (Windows shows it as a RODE NT-USB Mini)

Some history of what lead to my last-resort decision to reinstall ...  for those who care curious ...
Turns out when I restarted again, Multitrack has the same problem. So that was a dead end.  Next, I tried using my Airpods to record. Worked fine (Waveform / Multitrack). So must a problem with my NT-USB Mini driver, right? Wrong ... I installed Audacity, and it worked fine.  No matter how I fiddled with the hardware / channel settings in Audition, the same wacky problem kept happening.  The fact that the uninstall with removing all app data solved the problem tells me that Audition must have had some corrupt hardware mapping related to the NT-USB Mini.

Luckily I'm a new Audition user and only had 1 preset I cared about for the parametric EQ. Too bad Audition doesn't allow you to export those directly ... other products like Dreamweaver have the exact same icon in their UI for presets, but they actually allow you to save them wherever you want to. In Audition you have to dig into your user data to find them, and even there it's not so obvious what you need to grab.
