Where did my audio recording disappear to on Mac?

Hi.

I am using the Adobe Creative Cloud App for Mac. I opened up Audition CC for the first time. I selected New Audio File and named my file. I did about 4 of these tests. I then recorded for 45 minutes and it was up in the top left hand window under files, with the file name I gave it.

I opened some multitrack session and imported another audio file and played around with these but the whole time my original audio recording remained untouched.

I closed Adobe Audition.

When I opened it back up I went to the open file option and there was a creative cloud files option in my drive. When I clicked in there, it had Audition/ 12.0/ backup and in there were a bunch of .sesex files, none of them with any sound. My audio file is nowhere to be found. I have searched for the name on my mac but I can't find it. Any ideas where it might have gone? I checked in preferences and it is set to autosave every 10 minutes so there should at the very least be recovery files there. But where are they?

This is really upsetting as I can't re-record that audio as it was an interview.

The other thing is that it's only session files that get auto-saved, not your audio files. And when you click 'save' you will have the option to choose a path. If you don't do that, then whatever the default path set up is wherever your audio files will be.

That's awful that you could name and record something and then it not be saved. What a design flaw. Especially on a Mac app where things are saved automatically. Thank you for clarifying this. I hope in future editions of the program this is corrected.

It's emphatically not awful, and not a design flaw. It happens quite frequently that people start recordings, and then need to scrap them and start again, and the last thing you need is to have the file name you want to use unavailable, because you've already saved something. And have a drive full of clutter that's useless, and you have to clean up subsequently, which wastes time.

Session files don't contain any audio. They contain information about where audio is, and which bit of a file you're using, at any given point in a multitrack session. They relate only to multitrack view.

May I respectfully suggest that before you start calling things 'awful' and complaining about them, that you actually take some time to study the program, and have a look at the many videos available on YouTube, and indeed Adobe's own training materials? Audition is professional software, and it is designed to work efficiently in a professional environment. Yes it has a few features that might well be put under the heading of 'caveat emptor' but all of them are present for a good reason. Or if for some reason there isn't a good reason, then users soon complain about them, and they get altered. But this only happens on the basis of a rational argument in favour of the change, and that's simply not going to happen when it comes to saving behaviour.

The one thing you haven't mentioned is any form of saving... It takes more than just giving a file a name, I'm afraid - you have to save it when you've finished recording it. Yes, Audition will let you create several files without saving them, and will even let you use them in a multitrack session, but if you don't save them, then when you close the program, you lose them.

There are two other things to note; first is that when you record a file, if it isn't saved it will have an asterisk * next to it in the files list, and secondly, you should have got a warning when you shut Audition down about unsaved files. If you didn't get that, you've either cancelled all the warnings or they really are saved where you put them!
