Can you recover a closed file that wasn't saved?

I inadvertantly closed a recording, a new file, that I hadn't saved on my computer. I hadn't named it. It was recorded many hours ago. Is it possible to retrieve that file or is it gone forever?

    It rather depends whether you recorded the file in Multitrack View or Waveform View.

     

    In Multitrack, the data is written direct to disk so is "saved" immediately.  It WILL be somewhere on your hard drive and I think you will have been asked to name it and select a storage location BEFORE you began recording.

     

    However, if you were in Waveform View, any recording is to a temporary file (presumably wherever you chose to set the Audition cache in Preferences?) but it is permanently saved only when you, as the user, choose the option to "Save" or "Save as...".  I believe the temporary file may be deleted when the computer is shut down.  However, a check in the location which you selected as the Audition Cache would be quite sensible, I think.

     

    However, it would seem, from what you write, that you recorded in Waveform View, in which case, I strongly suspect your file is no more!

    Thanks, thats what I think... since I was in Waveform, it's gone.  How do I check where the cache would be? I'm not familiar with how to do that.

    It will be listed in your Preferences panel, but frankly it's not worth checking because there is no recovery mechanism available - it's an automated recovery system that you only get to use once, and if you closed the machine rather than it crashed, it gets deleted anyway.
