Since the "Audition not applying Fabfilter Pro Q3 AU effects" thread is locked - I'd like to share my expereince with this. In fact I'm still running Audition ver.13.0.0.519. As far as I can tell it's the last public release where AU plugins have minimal issues.
While it's possible to sucessfully apply (bounce/process, etc.) any one of my countless AU installed plugins, there are still anomalies with iZotope versions specificially. E.g. when you insert any AU version of an iZotope plugin and subsequentaly attempt to play through it - a loud (clipped) burst of audio occurs. My guess is if your monitors are set at a very high playback level, and you are monitoring through them - there is potential for damage. And, it's certainly not a pleasant expereince when monitoring through headphones. In this case I use the VST version. They work fine. All other installed AU plugins provided by a multitude of developers work flawlessly.
I reported the burst anomoly a long time ago. Adobe acknowledged it. I have no idea if it was ever addressed.
Bottom line - I have a bunch of Effects Rack Presets saved that encapsulate AU versions of plugins. It would take a bit of reconfiguration to replace any such versions with a VST/VST3 version. I may opt to do this in order to finally update to the current version of Audition. I also use Pro Tools, which of course is not capable of running AU and/or VST plugins without third party assisstance. AAX dependency was never a big deal.
As far as Audition - if AU's are not formally "supported" , they need to do a better job of urging their users NOT to attempt to intsall and/or use AU versions. No snark intended. Right now their responses to reported problems have been vague.

My understanding - now - is that in Mac versions of Audition, AU plugins are indeed supported, and as such will be formally supported - so if they aren't working for any reason, you should get a response if they fail.
