Dynamics Processing - fine tuning control points?

Community Beginner ,

Hi Community!

I am fine-tuning my Dynamics Processing control points to match that of a web tutorial. I really like the settings and think they could work for me.

I take this path: Effects>Amplitude and Compression > Dynamics Processing and when the Dynamics window opens, I attempt to shift the control points to this setting: Point 1 - compression above -20.27; Point 2 - expansion below -20.27.

My challenge is to get points 1 and 2 to read the same db, in this case, -20.27. This way, there is compression above -20.27 and expansion below -20.27.

I can`t ever get point two to move off of -100.00 db on the x-axis.

In the web tutorial I saw, control point 2 is indeed at the far left (-100.00db) but the parameters I`ve mentioned are present in the Dynamics Processing window.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

You probably just need to add one more point, as you won't be able to shift the LH point from the LH side of the screen - I can't find any setting that can't be reproduced pretty easily. But I should warn you - all audio is different, and what works fine for one file isn't necessarily going to give you anything like the same results on another one. And don't worry about setting to decimal points of a dB - the human ear can't detect these even on a steady tone, so they won't make any difference to anything; the nearest dB is more than good enough in the Dynamics Processor. Probably the most important thing though is to make sure you've normalized your file to 0dB before processing, as this is the level that all the controls in the processor reference, and without doing that, your results will be all over the place.

Hi SteveG, many thanks for your insight! I agree with all your advice about db settings, as they`re based on his recording environment and voice, and how settings that are good for someone else may not be good for me. I`ll keep experimenting but did notice some real pizzazz when using those anything close to those settings.

I should also mention this video is from 2012 and Adobe has made many changes to Audition CC since then. Perhaps this is too outdated. In the video, the narrator/ producer showed those measurements with only two control points. Could it be he was showing a graph that isn`t totally accurate, to help build viewer traffic for potential new business? (There`s nothing wrong with that in my opinion.) Or perhaps this is an element of Dynamics Processing control points that`s been augmented in later updates.

Love to hear back whenever you`ve got time. In the meantime I`ll keep exploring Dynamics Processing for the best settings with additional control points.

The way the dynamics processor front screen works hasn't ever changed - it's the same now as it was in Cool Edit Pro! I had a look at the only YT video about dynamics processing and voice-overs from four years ago that I could find, and yes, there is a way of achieving compression and expansion with a single point, but it doesn't involve moving the -100dB point at all:

single point compress and expand.JPG

Now, for one very simple reason, I don't like this very much. The problem with it is that the amount of compression and expansion are inextricably linked; you drag the threshold point about, and it seriously affects both slopes, and you can only alter the compression slope by bringing down the overall output level, because you can't move the -100dB one. Or add makeup gain, which will confuse you even more! Much better to use more points, and retain some independence between the slopes, I'd say. Also, using the Spline Curves option is a good idea; you avoid any sudden jumps in level at the threshold points. Once again, this is easier to set up with more points on the curve. HTH...

Hi SteveG, thank you again! Pardon my absence due to being sideways at work. Do you remember the CEP2.0 demo jingle?? LOL `Cooooool Edit Proooo two point oooooohhhh!`

Going forward I`m using a third control point to retain independence between slopes. That old video must have been a mistake, as the 2nd control point was definitely hard left bottom but the Expander read the same db as the Compressor. See pic for reference.

At any rate I think your expertise and advice goes beyond merely making my settings the same as this one. I appreciate your efforts to help me learn how to max out my vocal quality through more knowledge of how DP works and the effect on my voice it has. I forge ahead!

Remember it? I can do a bit better than that...
