Hi there,

I'm having trouble finding where to rename my recorded tracks in the most recent edition of adobe audition. Am I missing something very obvious or is this feature no longer available as of Adobe Audition !CC 19 version 12.0.1.34

First to Adobe Audition - it's ridiculous not to be able to name a track within the files panel.   The easiest way to do it is to copy the existing track, open a new track, name it as you wish, and paste the copy audio into it. Delete the previous track.

ryclark’s (R.I.P) response SIX YEARS AGO  was correct, although he didn’t explain why this is the case. A track has to be open in Audition (not just in the Files menu) before you can rename it simply because of the almighty chaos it would certainly cause to an already-open session if it wasn’t. But let’s be clear - that chaos would happen anyway, which is why renaming a track or clip in Multitrack view doesn’t actually change the name of the file; it only alters the naming in the session file. The renaming is only related to its use in Audition, where the change is logged in the session file that is using it.

A decision was made by Adobe (I think sometime prior to Audition 3) that when it came to file control functions, that these would always be handled by the OS, not Audition itself. Prior to this, Cool Edit and the earliest version of Audition could alter file names directly. This is what ryclark meant by ‘since way back’.

Dumb Decision, its a database, changing file names in a work process is normal, unless you are Audition.

Where were you previously able to rename tracks that you can't do now? By the way the latest version of Audition is now 12.1. So I advise you to update to that version to check to see if it gives you the same problem.

Ah yes, a good question. I was unclear. I'm trying to rename the audio clips that I've recorded, not the track. I can rename the track just fine. But I used to be able to right-click and rename an audio clip I'd just recorded in the files panel. Now, I'm not able to do that.

AFAIAA you haven't been able to rename Clips or Files in the Files panel ever since way back. The only place that you can do it is in the Properties panel which you can reach by right clicking on the clip header and going down to Rename. Then it opens up the Properties panel for you if it isn't already available.
