Subclipping in Audition?

I have no idea what 'subclipping' is - it's not a part of Audition terminology, nor any other that I'm aware of, I'm afraid. What Audition uses are markers, and they can be used in more than one way. The methodology is quite straightforward, and used by most broadcasters. If you have a file open in Waveform view and you highlight a selection of audio that you want to use, and hit F8, it will make a marker range of it, which is displayed in the Markers window. You don't have to make a range - you can place a single marker at each end and make the range later, in the window. Each range can be given a name, which can be anything you like. When you have selected all the ranges you want to use, you can start to do the clever bit. If you right-click on any single range in the list, it gives you an option to insert it into a multitrack session - either a new one, or one you already have open.

What it's actually doing is inserting some numbers, not actually transferring anything, even though it looks as though it has. What it's done is created a 'clip' in multitrack that you can pick up and reposition wherever you want it, and because it's only some numbers, you can expand and contract it too. You can also split it again, and use each part separately as many times as you like. And you can go back to the original file and add more clips if you need to - and there is no sensible limit to the number of files you have open either, so you can use as much source material as you like. The only restriction is that the files you use this way have to be open in order to place clips from them - you can't do this from a closed file.

But as a system, it works pretty well. Markers can also be used to create CD tracks, incidentally. Markers in Multitrack view are somewhat different; they only place marks on the timeline, and don't relate to any actual audio at all. The reason is pretty obvious, if you think about it. The only other thing I'd mention doesn't directly relate to markers, but is about making podcast sessions in Audition. Whatever you do, don't use the Podcast template! It does strange stuff to tracks and can lead you badly astray. Use the default template instead - much safer.
