Br very slow when loading photos from external hard drives and Dropbox.  It is painful to run with multiple windows open looking at various sources.  Is there a setting to help fix this?

I know it's more than a year past your question. I had been having the same issue. In fact, it would sometimes force my external drive to eject. But I found something that helps. I purged the Bridge cache and now it's working well. Images are loading into preview much faster.
