Camera Raw editing is not enabled

Bridge 3
Camera Raw 5.2
In Bridge when I right click and select to open a raw file in Camera Raw i get an error message that "Camera Raw editing is not enabled. Camera Raw editing requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature".
There is no problem opening a raw file in Camera Raw when just Open is selected or Open With (PS) or double-clicking
So I can learn to live with it but it never was a problem in earlier versions of PS/Bridge/ACR - is it a bug?
I just had a hard drive failure and had to re-install the OS & all my apps doing various upgrades in the process.
The files that are thumbnails in Bridge were safely stored on another hard drive (not the one that failed and they were created and used with an earlier version of everything).
The camera raw plugin is in the correct folder HD>library>app support>adobe>plugins>cs4>file formats.
There are no other instances of camera raw duplicated elsewhere on the computer.
The camera is a 2 year old canon 5D so it is for sure supported.
Any ideas ?
thanks

When you have used the Adobe Updater it might have gone wrong with the latest ACR (5.2)
Download the latest ACR plugin 5.2 from the Adobe site (you have to use your account or make one, its free) and replace this plugin manually in the right location (replace the existing one and make sure you have only one installed 🙂 )
And also refresh the preferences for Bridge using option key while restarting Bridge. Reset the preferences again to your wishes and try again.

The CameraRaw.8bi file present at Library/Application Support/Adobe/Camera Raw
Please see whether the CameraRaw.8bi is present at this location.
The update for Camera Raw 5.3 is live, so you can get it by-
1. Manually downloading it and putting it at the above location
OR
2. Running Help->Updates for your Product and selecting "Photoshop Camera Raw" in the Updater Preferences.
After Updating to Camera Raw 5.3, Please reboot your Computer. Also see that Bridge is not running in the Hide mode.
You then launch your Product and from it launch Bridge. Thereafter , your Camera Raw Preferences should be enabled.

I appreciate that you are monitoring the forum so closely and thanks for correcting me.
As pointed by you, the correct path is -
HardDrive/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-ins/CS4/File
Formats/
The Camera Raw.plugin file has to be downloaded for the 5.3 version and to be kept at the above location.
Frank - does Updating to Camera Raw 5.3 solve your issue also?
Thanks,
Mansi

I had PSCS3 and Bridge, no issues
I just saved to buy CS4...and now that I have it, my .NEF (Nikon D90) files open in PSCS4 but not in Bridge. It says raw editing not enabled.
I have tried purging cache, manually putting the 5.2 camera raw plugin in the folder Disk/Applications/Adobe Bridge CS 4/Plug-Ins folder and no luck. I'm quite disappointed and am hoping Adobe puts up a solution here asap. I've looked high and low on the internet and there's no sure-fix solution out yet. I believe

The latest version of Camera is 5.3. If you have done a correct installation the Camera Plug in should not be placed in the application folder!
You also must have only one Camera Plug in installed.
Here is a copy of the instructions from the Camera Raw download site at Adobe.com (adobe.com/support/downloads and search for Camera Raw),
be sure to follow them precisely and you will be OK as thousands of others are :
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
To open a DMG file:
Double-click the file. This will open Disk Copy, which mounts the image on your desktop.
To install with Adobe Creative Suite 4 or Photoshop CS4:
Automated installation on Mac or Windows:
1. Select Updates... from the Help menu.
2. Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the latest available Camera Raw update.
Manual installation on Mac OS:
1. Exit Photoshop CS4 and Adobe Bridge.
2. Open the download file, double-click CameraProfiles.dmg, and follow the on-screen instructions.
3. Open the Finder.
4. Navigate to the root of the local disk (not the user's home folder).
5. Navigate to: (Please read directory carefully)
Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS4/File Formats
6. Move the existing plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
7. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw, from the download into the same folder as in Step 5.
8. Launch Photoshop CS4 or Adobe Bridge.
NOTE: If generic camera thumbnails appear in Adobe Bridge, follow these steps:
1. Check to make sure the plug-in was installed in the correct directory in Step 5 above.
2. Start Adobe Bridge.
3. Choose Tools > Cache > Purge Central Cache.
Important: Purging the Central Cache deletes cached thumbnail information for all folders. It also deletes labels, ratings, and rotation settings for read-only files (for example, files on a CD or locked files) or file formats that don't have XMP support.

The disappointment has to be directed at yourself, Siddharth, for not following the instructions correctly. There's nothing Adobe can do about that.
You put the Camera Raw plug-in the wrong location.
Note that the correct path begins with your ROOT LEVEL Library, not your user library. Also, the current version is 5.3, not 5.2. The image below shows the correct path. Though ACR 5.2 is shown, the location is identical for 5.3.
Command-click on the thumbnail below to open the full image in a new browser tab.

This problem has been driving me nuts, however I came across what I think is the answer.
I have CS4 and Windows Vista. If I have CS4 open and then open Bridge and right click on an thumbnail in Bridge and select 'open in ACR', or 'control+R', then the dreaded 'Camera Raw is not enabled' message appears.
However, if I do not open CS4 but go directly into Bridge, then click on a thumbnail, ACR opens automatically. If I press shift and click on a thumbnail then CS4 opens. Itseems to me that it should be the other way round, 'shift+click' should open ACR and 'click' should open CS4. However this is what happens so I am learning to live with it.
If Adobe staff read this please send an update which will reverse this, therefore correcting it, or perhaps change your instructions round so that they match the reality. In any case let me know.

This is a user to user forum so if you need respons from Adobe you should
contact them directly, using the contact button on the site and open a case.
Second, you are aware that you are in the Macintosh forum and not Windows?
Have you tried the Bridge for Windows forum already?
And if you can use ACR without opening PS itself it sounds like you have
installed the ACR plugin on the correct location, so probably it is a
preference problem. Try a restart for Bridge with refresh preferences to
default (for mac this is holding down the option - alt- key), not a clue
what it is for Windows.

Bridge 3
Camera Raw 5.5
Here's a simple solution:
Open Bridge -> have any .CR2 image -> double-click it - it will open in Camera Raw ->in Camera Raw click on "Open Preferences Dialog" or Apple K -> down at the bottom of a Camera Raw Preferences in the boxes "JPEG and TIFF Handling select "Automatically open all supported JPEGs" and "Automatically open all supported TIFFs" -> OK to get out of the Camera Raw Preferences -> Cancel out of the Camera Raw. Then close down Bridge and Photoshop. Reopen Bridge, right-click or double click on ANY image format (JPEGS, . CR2) it triggers Camera Raw from here on.
if you have any questions feel free to contact me.

I have had exactly the same problem this week. I tried installing the latest 5.5 plug in from Adobe but ended up getting a major error in Bridge, I ended up doing a complete uninstall/reinstall including the latest Adobe updates which includes the 5.5 plug in. Everyhing is all OK now.

Getting this issue on CS5 just installed. Worked fine on CS4 before using ctrl-r etc. have tried changing the settings. Though I now end up opening all jpegs in RAW, the CTRL-R still doesn't function. also downloaded the latest RAW which auto installed.

beside running the updater as per Nini have you already tried a restart for Bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences.
And are you able to run the file in ACR using other commands, double click opens in PS or Bridge as per your setting in the Bridge prefs using right mouse click menu gives you the option to choose open with and open in Camera Raw (that is in Bridge itself) the open with can be PS.
