Shortcut for renaming file bridge

What is the keyboart shortcut to renaming a file in Bridge?  I can't find it in menu or even their list anymore thanks!

Hi, @larry45, right off the top of my head I cannot think of one. But if there was, it would still take one action to select the file and a second action to start the rename process. For renaming, you have to click on the name to make it active, pause a moment, and then click again to make it renamable.

However, if you have a number of images that you want to rename, if you click, pause, and then click again on the first one, rename it, and then press the TAB key and that will automatically go to the next image (left to right), and select the text for renaming.

I do not know if this is what you were looking for, but it does activate the text for renaming. However, you have to start the process by activating the text first.

Gary thanks, that'll do it! whew, was going through right click and dropdown. Still the mouse, but lot better than that. I remember the keyboard shortcut to rename -- it was F2 -- guess gone now.

Control-Shift-R is the keyboard shortcut.  You can also find it under the Tools menu.

Not control, option shift R and not rename file, batch, which is great, been using, but stil no shortcut for single file, ok just use mouse.

F2  is the keyboard shortcut for renaming a file. 

Tested and working on my PC system with Bridge Version 15.0.0.397.

This also works on the Mac, but Mac users have to jump a few more hurdles to get there. (I just tested this.) 

A bit of history: When the Mac first started adding the function keys to the keyboard, they doubled up on their function (no pun intended). For example, F1 will dim your screen, while F2 will brighten it. F10 will mute your computer, while F11 and F12 will decrease and increase the volume respectively. To use these keys as Function keys, the user must co-press the "fn" and Function keys.

Since this is a two-handed operation for functions on the keyboard's left side, I seldom use them. And since I seldom use them for left-side (of the keyboard) functions, I forget that I could use them for right-side (of the keyboard) functions. As I stated above, one first has to select the image to rename, then press the "fn" key AND F2 to start the renaming process. I click once, pause, and click again to reach the same point. As such, I didn't bother to learn about this. 

But I did check, and it works.

Now, before someone pipes up and says, "Hey, don't you know how to turn the function keys on??"

Yes, I do. If you go into Settings, the user can select the Function Keys and turn the slider "On" so that pressing the "fn" key is unnecessary; one only needs to press the Function key itself. However, I'm pressing the volume or video/sound control keys far more than the function keys, so I always have this turned off.

Hey, they won the two-button (plus) mouse war, so it's not as if they have nothing to provide. :>)

Serious question, though: Can you adjust computer-level activities directly from the keyboard with single-button control, or do you have to use multiple keys and/or have to go to the application to adjust? For example, can you raise or lower the computer's volume by tapping a single key regardless of which application is making the noise?

Thanks guys Gary, ok function keys are on, as see volume go up and down and mute;  BUT THE F1  and F2 for display brightness are not working no making display brigher/ darker, but not a mac display, it's ASus display.. ok  that it right/ now gotta decide.

Ah, good question. Take advantage of that search field on the top of the Settings window. By the time I type "func," it has been found and brought the result up to click on.

Hi Gary,

PCs are inherently customisable with regard to hardware. In particular there are literally hundreds of different keyboards available from many manufacturers. Clearly, I can’t speak for them all but I have a Microsoft 5050 keyboard and, in answer to your question, this one does allow one to adjust certain computer-level activities directly from the keyboard with single-button control e.g. volume, sound muting, music playback functions etc. There are single press buttons available for opening commonly used apps like mail, browser and so on. There is also a very useful bank of five “Favourite” buttons which can be programmed to open other apps or files e.g. Bridge, Photoshop or a particular spreadsheet for example.

I hope that is useful information for you and answers the question you put to me.

My curiosity was focused on the actual function keys. On the Mac, they have always been custom-assigned to various tasks, as I mentioned before. They are also function (Fn) keys that can be accessed by either pressing the Fn key or setting their function key dynamics as primary. 

You mentioned programmable keys; where are these located around the numeric keypad region, or can you customize the function keys? If you customize a function key, do you have to press a special key to let them do their function thing?

For the record, I have both a Logitech keyboard and mouse. I've always hated Mac mice and disliked keyboards. Both are customizable. The function keys above the regular numbers retain their Mac focus, as I described above. In other words, they require a separate key to get the function activity or change the setting in the Settings.

Hi Gary,

The function keys F1 to F10 can be remapped to various tasks I believe but, to be honest, that is something I have never attempted - never felt the need! The programmable keys I referred to  Microsoft calls "Favourites". There are five of them on the very top row of the keyboard. I do find these useful when configured to open an App or a file of some kind.

Erik thanks I have the new magic keyboard, full version.. and oddly when click the  f10 and f 11 I see the sound go up and down, thats a nice convenicene,  the f1 and f2 for birghtness would be nice, but don't think way as usuing a 3rd party monitor,  Also, f2 is not working for the rename file bridge, of which this thread is about. Any ideas?

Let me slip in here for Eric. One thing I think you need to check is what keyboard your Mac is sensing. 

If you go back to the Function key screen I showed you how to get to before, click on the item below Function keys, called Modifier Keys. 

On the upper right of that you'll see Select Keyboard. Please see if that is in fact the keyboard you are using. If you're using a Mac keyboard, let us know. If you're using a 3rd party keyboard, see if you have an app that you downloaded to customize the keyboard. If you can't find it, go to the manufacturer of your keyboard and download the app (they WILL have one)
