What does “read hierarchical keywords” do?

I have all three preferences (automatic, read, write) turned off.  What are the implications for this?  I am adding the keywords I want and manually choose the parent keyword if I want it.  If I move to Lightroom, will this setting matter?

Thank you.  I had read this before and re-read it just now.  Since my keyword hierarchy is more for convenience in choosing keywords and fairly simple, I guess I see no harm in leaving "read" unchecked.  It seems that a flat reading keeps parent and sub-keywords entirely disconnected.   It doesn't appear that it would have negative implications even if I decided to use Lightroom.  I am just a beginner here and it is a lot to wrap my head around.
