P: Denoise - large artifacts with AMD Graphics Card

When I use Denoise on RAW images, the images are putting strange squares on the DNG once it is created.  this was after the latest update on both mac and adobe lightroom.  I've spent HOURS on adobe customer service, don't know how to fix this.  I love that feature.

I have built and repaired computers for many years and in general when I see an issue like this with graphics card it is often a VRAM issue, either faulty, overheating, timings pushed too far by the driver.  The Enhance feature in LR is really pushing your GPU and it's VRAM quite hard and at the same time graphics manufacturers are always trying to leverage every

ounce of performance from products in driver updates.

You can't do much about the driver but you could try one of the following.  And yes a driver or system update can cause the power requirements to just tip the scale against you. 

Try LR settings/performance and select limit video cache, incrementally reducing it to determine if the issue disappears.  Even if your video card says you have XXGB of video memory it doesn't mean you/programs have full access or can fully utilise it.  A certain amount will be reserved, cached and all manner of things. 

If possible try running with the computer case open and see if that helps.  I know when I throw 20 images at enhance all my fans ramp up with the extra work it has to do and it's a great way to heat the room.  Many Mac's traditionally have very conservative thermal fan speed curves to preserve a quieter operational environement.

Everything you have mentioned i did with Adobe.  The interesting fact is that there where zero problems with LR before the last MAC OS update/ADOBE LR update.

A recent driver update with my daughters gaming PC (not Mac) with an AMD card altered the maximum thermal limit by around 10 degrees.  Yes, it is a touch faster now however the sound of the fans on the graphics card are like a Jet Engine now, a very poor trade off.

There have been many reports that the AMD version 24 drivers aren't working well with LR 13.

It may be that the version 24 AMD Adrenaline utility has started automatically applying a "gaming" profile to LR Classic. Some have reported that disabling the profile and "optimizations", restoring the default settings, lets the version 24 drivers work correctly with LR:

Denoise In LR used to work fine , but all of a sudden it produces strange rectangles in the DNG file.

Try disabling the GPU in LrC Preferences > Peformance tab. If doing so helps, then the issue is related to GPU driver for your graphics card. Unfortunately, Apple is unlikely to fix this as support for Intel based Macs is being phased out.

Report this as a bug. Since it runs Sonoma, that is a relatively recent iMac and should not show artefacts like this. They are caused by bugs in the GPU drivers. Adobe might contact Apple and get them to put out a fix to the GPU drivers. It's a long shot but might help resolve this.

Started as bug report, but was reclassed by admin. GPU off (or custom) solves this new issue for now. For one or two images the speed penalty is not noticeable, but for large batch jobs it might be a different story.

Prior to last week that problem never occurred, so something changed (I update OS an LR frequently). But after 4+ years of largely trouble-free use, Apple apparently thinks it's time to buy a new box😡

I have the same problem with an Intel iMac and an AMD Radon Pro 5500XT by GPU. At first it seemed that disabling the GPU (as suggested in this forum) solved the issue, but rather quickly it started to occur with the GPU off as well.

For reasons known only to Adobe, the option Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor doesn't affect LR's AI commands (AI masking, Lens Blur, Denoise).  In LR 13.0, they finally provided a klutzy way to disable the use of the GPU for AI masking:

When I open a Sony a6700 RAW fIle and use AI Denoise, the generated DNG Image has big white rectangles on it, sometimes with RGB-Patterns in it, sometimes lightly transparent or with a purple hue. When i view the image with macOS Preview, everything is fine, no rectangles, but when i open it with Bridge or Photoshop, there are those rectangles...
I expect a denoised image, not one with those rectangles.

History: Some days ago everything was fine. macOS auto updated to 14.4.1. Then this bug occured. Then i updated Bridge, Photoshop (and Camera raw), but the bug still is there.

All recent Intel Macs use AMD graphics (or Intel integrated.) If you restart the computer, does the problem go away? I have seen something similar on a 2019 MacBook Pro and I think its running low on memory.

Yes, i restarted several times, no change... I just tested it with a MacBook Air 2022 M2 8GB: Bridge, Photoshop and Camera Raw have the same version, but macOS is still Ventura not Sonoma. It works great. I will edit my photos with the MacBook and after that i may update to Sonoma to check if it still works or if the bug is somehow related to Sonoma. But... maybe i have to keep the MacBook in this working configuration...!?

Memory is not the problem, my Intel-Mac has 64GB RAM and memory usage isn't going even up while AI Denoise is "thinking" und with the 8GB MacBook its working fine...

I suspect the problem on my machine was VRAM running low.

I've had an Adobe person walk me through a variety of possible fixes, and the end result was: nothing fixed it, it still happens, and I got an email saying what Rikk Flohr said below: a ticket has been opened on this issue. His post is 4/5, the person I worked with around the 15th, yet didn't say anyone else was having this issue.  Another thing: with this update, where the AI Denoise came into play, I noticed the image files download from my R5 all seemed grainier than they've ever been before. Especially flash photos (interior architechural).
