P: Denoise - large artifacts with AMD Graphics Card

Explorer ,
Mar 24, 2024 Mar 24, 2024

When I use Denoise on RAW images, the images are putting strange squares on the DNG once it is created.  this was after the latest update on both mac and adobe lightroom.  I've spent HOURS on adobe customer service, don't know how to fix this.  I love that feature.

I've opened a ticket for the Camera Raw team to investigate.

Tried eveything you mentioned long ago, no success, and as subscriber I chose to let them know every step.  Thank you for your time.

Yo Rikk,

Curious where the fix of the artifact issue stands, or if Adobe closed the file, because my kit (3.6 GHz 10-Core Intel Core i9, AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT 8 GB, LR 13.4, CR 16.4) continues to serve garbage when NR is activated, plus a massive overexposure of the original image.

Bonjour,

J'ai exactement le même soucis et c'est trés gênant. Je dois faire la réduction de bruit plusieurs fois et puis d'un coup on ne sait pas pourquoi ça marche.

J'espère que vous pourrez nous apporter une solution.

J'ai également un Imac

It sounds like you both are having the issue in this thread.

It affect AMD GPUs in older Macs.

Since you are using the latest version of Lightroom Classic, I take it the issue for the AMD GPU hasn't been fixed yet.

There is a known issue with AMD cards on Intel Macs and Sonoma 14.4/14.5. It is intermittent and most commonly shows up in Camera RAW/Lightroom. Try restarting and/or disabling graphics acceleration.

I restarted LR and turned off Graphics Acceleration and problem hasn't returned after 4 tries. Seems slower processing but could be expectations. Thanks for suggestions.

Merci

Other members suggest going into Lightroom preferences and turn off graphics acceleration. I had the same issue. It does get rid of the problem but somewhat slower processing with it off.

Recently updated to LRC 13.5 and attached images show the issue. Never had this issue or any in previous versions. Tried on 3 images and same thing occurred. Not useable obviously, but no idea what to do now.

Can you give ore info on your hardware and your camera? Do a system info in classic for the first. If you have an older intel Mac with a radeon GPU card that might be the issue as there is a GPU driver issue causing artifacts in images. I've also seen some mentions of people with the same card on windows having issues.

1. Please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

2. Try rolling back to LR 13.4.  Does Denoise now work again?

"Operating system: Mac OS 14
Version: 14.5.0 [23F79]

Metal: AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT"

Mac OS 14.4.1 introduced a nasty bug in the graphics driver for AMD Radeon 5000-series GPUs that's causing this and other symptoms.  Adobe has notified Apple many months ago, which hasn't yet released a fixed driver.  Restarting the computer sometimes makes the issue go away temporarily.

One or two have reported that setting Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor helps with the Denoise issue, though I find that surprising, since Adobe inexplicably refuses to allow the use of the GPU by LR's AI commands to be disabled.

Yes, I can confirm, the denoise feature on Lightroom Classic works just fine under Sequoia 15.0 and the latest update from Adobe. And it seems to me that the denoise performs even better now (in terms of image quality). Happy denoising to you all!
