Images appear too saturated in Camera Raw

When I few images (whether they be RAW files or jpgs) in Camera Raw, they appear very oversaturated.

I've been trying to tackle this as a color profile problem with my PC, as I have had some issues getting the right calibration in the past and did find some issues with Windows assigning my monitors with the wrong number. I'll also be the first to admit I don't know  100% what I'm doing. But I can confirm I've reset color management profiles, as well as changed my color profiles numerous times as part of testing (to always the same result: changing my PC's color profiles did not change the oversaturated look in Camera Raw.)

So after endlessly searching and trying just about every solution I could find, I finally tried reverting Camera Raw from version 16+ to version 14.1 (downloaded it here: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-in-installer.html)

And it fixed the problem. When using Camera Raw 14.1, I get a very brief flash of the oversaturated color, but then it goes back to matching what the image looks like in my Photoshop workspace, allowing me to work and adjust colors accurately within Camera Raw.

But while this does fix the oversaturation problem, it doesn't help that there are features within Camera Raw 16+ that I really like and want to use that are not available in 14.1. Using this solution, I've lost a lot of use I had for Camera Raw in the first place.

So...  what do I do? The original problem cropped up during a period when nothing had knowingly changed on my PC, but I do have auto-updates for Adobe Creative Cloud running. This small version test also seems to imply the issue might be somewhere within Adobe's software, but I feel like I've changed every single related setting 100s of times to no avail. I even recently tried Adobe's Cleaner Tool with a fresh reinstall of Bridge, Photoshop, and Camera Raw, and that did not change anything. And just to say, I've also tried earlier versions of these products, and somehow they didn't fix the problem, either (and, still, even if it did work, I'd lose lots of great features doing this.)

Any ideas? I feel like I've already read and followed just about every thread relating to this topic, but maybe someone knows something I haven't already tried.

This is a monitor profile issue - but most likely one triggered by a GPU falling a bit behind and/or buggy GPU driver.

These two are intimately connected because the conversion from source color space into the monitor color space is executed in the GPU nowadays. That's ACR's display color management chain, and for it to work as intended, the monitor profile and the GPU need to work flawlessly together.

The same thing applies to Photoshop, but ACR seems to be more critical with tighter GPU requirements now.

If you post Help > System Info from Photoshop, we can see your GPU configuration.

You may be seeing a current bug that can hit the OpenCL component in the GPU driver. Try to uncheck OpenCL in Preferences > Performance > Advanced - although I don't know if this will affect ACR's use of the GPU..

You can also go into ACR preferences and set GPU to "custom", and try to uncheck options there.

If that's what it is, this is currently being investigated by Adobe. In the meantime you may need to stay on an old version.

Turning off and on all the various GPU settings is one of the steps I had tried getting to this point - so far, no luck 😞 Camera Raw itself doesn't seem to have any options about OpenCL specifically; just GPU on or off.

Same issue and also in lightroom. Disabling GPU acceleration works around the issue but thats not ideal.

Interestingly, I have two computers with different configurations. One has the issue, the other doesnt. Both on latest GPU drivers and all adobe updates.

win11 + amd rx6800xt    ->  color problem in ACR and LR

win10 + amd rx7900xtx ->  color is correct in ACR and LR

I started noticing this issue today, and I was quite upset. What good is Camera Raw if you can't really  see your true image colors? I fixed it by doing 2 things: and I do not know which of those fixed it. Anyway, I have an AMD gpu which I happened to update the driver a couple days ago. I decided to download the "Enterprise" version of the driver which is supposed to be more stable and more geared toward graphic design rather than gaming. So I did that, then I updated Camera Raw to 16.2. After those 2 things, issue is fixed! I tend to think it was the gpu update that was the problem to begin with. They always say to update your gpu, but I think sometimes, instaed of fixing things, it breaks things!

I understand your frustration with the oversaturated images in Camera Raw  versions 16 and above. While reverting to version 14.1 fixes the issue, it sacrifices valuable features. Here are some suggestions that might help, although they don't directly involve Total Tools:

  1. Contact Adobe Support: Since you've exhausted most troubleshooting steps, explain your situation to Adobe Support. They might have insights specific to your setup or offer a temporary workaround until a permanent fix is available.

  2. Check for GPU Issues: Newer versions of Camera Raw utilize the GPU for faster processing. In some cases, this can lead to graphical glitches. Try disabling the GPU acceleration in Camera Raw preferences and see if it resolves the oversaturation.

  3. Explore Alternative RAW Converters: While not ideal, consider using third-party RAW converters like Capture One or Iridient X-Transformer. These might offer a different processing pipeline that doesn't exhibit the oversaturation issue.
