Not seeing CR2 files when I export from Lightroom -- only XMP?

I export from Lightroom frequently and have never had this issue, but today I exported a bunch of files and then went to open them in PS. I only saw the XMP files, but not the CR2 files. I can't just open the XMP file. Anyone had this happen and know how to fix?

I tried overwriting again in Lightroom but it didn't help.

I should add that I bought some presets for LR and PS today and am wondering if that could have changed something. Though everything in my LR export box looks the same as usual.

What is your workflow in more detail?

Normally if I want to do something in PS from a master image in LR I use Edit in PS from LR on one image at a time.

And I am confused by the terminology of exporting files and expecting CR2s somewhere.  Normally the CR2s remain in their original location as master files and you create another type of file from an Export operation, like a JPG or maybe a TIF but not just a copy of the CR2 which is what it sounds like you're doing.
