P: (Technology Preview) Reflection Removal (CR)

This post applies to Adobe Camera Raw plug-in.

Adobe Camera Raw team is sharing an early look of our new Reflection Removal feature, which removes reflections caused by plate glass surfaces from photos.

Note:

The feature currently only works on raw photos. Support for non-raw photos (e.g., JPEGs or HEICs) will be added in a future update.

There is a known issue on some Windows machines where the feature may produce a corrupt image. We are working on a fix for the upcoming release.

Getting started with the Reflection Removal feature:

Make sure you have the “New AI Features and Settings Panel” Technology Preview enabled in the Camera Raw plug-in Preferences dialog (requires restarting the host application to activate).

Go to the Remove panel [B] , and in the “Distraction Removal” section, click on the “Reflections” checkbox.

Optionally adjust the slider after the ML model is done computing.

Use the rest of the Camera Raw tools just like you would otherwise.

When using the slider, the key values to note are:

0 – the input photo

100 – de-reflected (window reflections removed) photo

-100 – reflection photo (what the window was reflecting towards the camera)

Please try the feature and share feedback in this community forum. It would help to include details like how you access Camera Raw (via Adobe Bridge or Photoshop), your computer system details, and as much information about what you like or do not like about the resulting photo quality. Our team will continually monitor this thread to track issues to improve the future experience.

When to use Reflection Removal

The feature is designed to deal with large-area reflections when shooting through windows. Many other types of reflections occur in nature and are captured in photographs, but this feature may not recognize and handle those. We plan to work on expanding the supported reflection types in the future.

Example use-cases for the feature include:

Looking through windows inside-out (e.g., from the car, airplane, room windows, etc.)

Looking through windows outside-in (e.g., shop windows)

Museums (e.g., paintings behind glass, glass case exhibits, etc.)

How best to use Reflection Removal

For best results, try the new feature following these suggestions:

Apply Reflection Removal before applying any other edits to the photo, except for Enhance features such as Denoise
- The changes made to the photo may be quite profound and render any changes you already made inappropriate.
- If you plan to use both Enhance (Denoise, Super Resolution, or Raw Details) and Reflection Removal on a photo, it is better to apply Enhance first.
Play with the feature slider and adjust the removal strength as appropriate.
If you applied Adobe Adaptive (beta) profile prior to running the Reflection Removal feature, please update it or you may see traces of removed reflections still present in the photo (Adobe Camera Raw will remind you to do this).

I tried some old Canon CR2 (I don’t have CR3) and Panasonic RW2 (micro 4/3) images, and reflection removal was available for both. Some people say Sony ARW doesn’t work, but the raw images I tried from two cameras do work.

I agree with David Franzen that it’s important to be specific about how it’s not working. Because looking through this thread, there are different ways that it “doesn’t work” and Adobe needs to know which one it is, and under what circumstances.

From what I am seeing, different people are reporting these different kinds of “doesn’t work”:

A. The Reflections option does not even appear, it’s not there.

B. The Reflections option does appear, but is dimmed (can’t be selected).

C. The Reflection option appears and can be selected, but produces unexpected or unusable results.

Problem A happens when someone is using a non-raw workflow, which can include using a non-raw file, or when the image is a non-raw layer in Photoshop, or when sending an image from Lightroom Classic using Photo > Edit In > Adobe Photoshop (which renders the file so that it’s no longer raw). It can also happen if Camera Raw is opened as Camera Raw Filter, instead of the real Camera Raw processor. The easiest way for me to test this has been to select a raw image in Adobe Bridge and choose File > Open in Camera Raw. This ensures that Photoshop is not involved so that Photoshop won’t introduce any steps that render out of raw, and so that you can totally avoid Camera Raw Filter.

Problem B can happen if the file format isn't supported.

Problem C can happen if it’s an actual bug of some kind.

Now, from some CR2 and RW2 examples I tried, reflection removal is available but I got different results.

CR2 from a Canon 7D: Worked great, no problem.

RW2 from a Panasonic G85, m43: -100 is totally black, +100 still has all the reflections with a tiny bit of added contrast.

This is on an M1 Pro MacBook Pro, macOS 14.7.2.

Please verify you are opening the files are raw files, and that you are opening the raw files directly. Note the workflows Conrad_C noted--there are various worklfows (for example using Camera Raw as a filter) where the original photo was a raw file, but you are using Camera Raw to edit non-raw data derived from the original.

I read somewhere today that we have to open the raw file right into ACR (open a raw file in PS directly - goes right into ACR) for this to work. That did it! Previously, I was using the ACR filter once I opened the photo in PS using 'edit in' in LR Classic. This feature doesn't yet work when you get to it using the ACR filter.

ive opened Fujifilm and Nikon raw files directly into Photoshop and applied
the Camera Raw Filter.
Reflection Removal is grayed out and info message says file format
incompatible.
This filter isn't even beta, its more like alpha plus. Adobe really dropped
the ball and let it roll downhill.

After watching Unmesh's video on this topic I just retried the feature by opening a Raw directly from Photoshop.

Surprise - it worked. But when I open the same image from Lightroom it does not work because PS thinks its not a raw foto.

First., there is the very strange behaviour of Camera Raw. The feature is unavailable on RAW files unless I open Camera Raw from Bridge. I have noticed this behaviour with other features that are supposed to be available in Camera Raw. None come to mind at the moment but this is a case in point. Yes, I am working with a RAW file and yes, the Tech Preview feature is on in all cases. The feature is disabled from Photoshop and Photoshop Beta. Second, I am not impressed. The image I used provided no results whatsoever and yes, I moved the slider all over its range.

When I open a RAW file directly into ACR from Bridge (without opening PS) and process the file per your suggestion, everything is good until I hit the "Open" button.

At this point, PS attempts to open and gets to the home screen, and without opening the file and freezes/crashes. My only recourse is to end the task through Task Manager, as none of the buttons on the home screen function.

However, if I open a RAW file from Bridge going directly to PS, which then opens ACR, processes the file, and hits OPEN, all proceeds as normal with no problem.

I prefer opening RAW files directly into ACR, but when using Distraction Removal>Reflections I now know I'll have to use the alternate method.

I tried this feature on a noisy image. If I just remove reflections, the resulting image looks pretty good (other than the noise). If I run AI noise removal afterwards, I get prompted to update AI and the reflections come back. If I run noise reduction first, the reflection removal generates poor results. I think you need to look at how these two AI functions interact with one another.

Interesting concept. I am a real estate photographer and deal with bathroom reflections due to shower doors, mirrors etc. It seems to work at about a 50% .efficacy. It struggles swith removing the reflection of the lights that are on the shoer door from the the mirrow accros from the shower door. Excited to see the changes coming, especially when it will work with TIFF files

I have a 50% success rate with reflection removal. Shooting indoors framed art and pictures with a glass front.

Sharp angled reflections go away nicely, reflection removal is not removing the plaid shirt of the photographer.

Does this support ORF and DNG files? I reset the preferences, quit and relaunched Photoshop just updated, and the Reflections removal was greyed out.

I have been Apple to use this with AppleProRaw files. These are DNG, but be careful DNG files can contain non-Raw images.
