P: Add support for OM-1 high resolution files (12-Bit)

I recently purchased an OM Systems OM-1 mark II camera. The camera is capable of creating high resolution photos (80 MP files) using the cameras native 20MP sensor. It creates the high res files by taking mulitple shots and merging them (in camera) to create a single high res image. Unfortunatly Lightroom Classic does not seem to be able to import these high res files. The normal resolution files transfer with no issue, it's only the 80MP high resolution images which won't transfer.

Upload a sample .orf to Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar and post the sharing link here.  We can verify that the issue occurs on other installations. Assuming it does, then at a minimum, a footnote should be added to the Supported Cameras help page indicating this limitation, similar to the footnotes for Canons with the Dual Pixel feature.

I have experienced the same issue. The strange thing is that high res. handheld (40 Mp) files is imported. They both have a seperate *.ORI file assosiated with the finished *.ORF file. The import should be the same for both file sizes.

I have now tested this om my old camera (E-M1 mk3) which also can produce both 40 and 80 mp files. I found that Lighroom imports the high res files from the old camera just fine. From the new OM-1 only the 40 mp files will import!

I had to change the in-camera setting for high resolution images from 12 bit to 14 bit. After I did that, I was successfully able to transfer all high resolution images into Lightroom. On the OM-1 mark II, this setting can be found under the purple camera 2 menu. Look for "High Res Shot" then "RAW Rescording Bit".

I have encountered the same problem. I worked around it by converting the high res image to a *.tif file in OM Workspace which I was then able to import into LrC. I have now seen the suggestion to change the high res settings in camera from 12 bit to 14 bit which might help going forward ...

This suggests there's a LR / Camera Raw bug in processing 12-bit high-resolution images. If some can share such an image, we can submit a bug report (Adobe likely won't pay attention without a sample file).  Upload it to Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar and post the sharing link here.

Would it be possible to supply a couple of raw+jpeg pairs of files taken in the 12-bit mode for each aspect ratio

your camera can produce?

You will need to shoot a raw/jpeg pair in your camera to create the new pair if you do not already have them. A raw file alone is not enough to review.
Engineering would review these files in the context of future support.

Hi Rikk,

Many thanks for revising yr message. I will send you a DM with a link to the files (because it is an OM-D camera it also produces an *.ori file when using HR mode so you will have a 10 sets of triplets rather than twins!

Best wishes,

DT

The OM-1 Mark II can create either 12 bit or 14 bit High Resolution images (Pixel Shift).  This can be done in either Handheld mode which creates 50mp files or in Tripod Mode which creates 80mp images.

The 12 bit Tripod Mode images can not be opened in Photoshop or imported into LightRoom Classic.  Strangely enough, the 14 bit images can be opened,  and that is a new function in the Mark II version of the Camera.  It is just the 12 bit tripod mode high resolution images that fail.

The 12 bit Handheld mode images can be opened as well as the 14 bit Handheld mode images.

I would attach an example file to this post, but the limit says 47 mb.  The 12 bit example I have is 65.6 mb.

I've tried this with several images just to validate that the image wasn't somehow corrupted on the memory card.

I'm on LightRoom Classic 13.5.1.   Camera Raw 16.5.

I have the exact same problem with the OM-1 mark II high resolution files as described by others in this thread, and identical to the situation described by KCB56. The problem seems to be with Adobe Camera RAW, since the behavior is identical in Lightroom and Photoshop's ACR module. Also as described, going into the camera menu and changing the RAW Recoding Bit rate from the default 12bit to 14bit allows the file to be recognized, imported and processed by both LR and Photoshop. I am also willing to upload some files if that would be helpful in getting the problem fixed. But as KCB56 noted, the file size of the High Resolution image is high:  65 mb.

I should also add that I have tested these files in other raw converters, such as DxO PhotoLab 6, Fast RAW Viewer, OM Workspace, and Topaz Photo AI. None of them have this problem with opening and processing this camera's High Resolution .orf files, regardless of whether they are 12bit or 14bit.
