Adding Video - Sony Handycam

Rick (or anyone),

I'm trying to add video to my training using my Sony Handycam.

Although I'm good with Captivate, I am a moron with .swf files and the addition of video so excuse the questions as they may be very basic to the computer savvy folks!

1) Once I 'film' the presentation, what is the easiest way for me to import?
2) Can I edit my film (like I can with audio) through Captivate?
3) Is it better to host the .swf files on a shared drive or include them in the presentation?
4) Is there any method to adjust the size of the video when it appears in the presentation? Some of the media players have a box about 2" x 2".

Or if you can point me in a direction to read about this? The online tutorials and the Captivate book I have are not very helpful on video.

Chuck

    thanks rick,

apologies : i should have found a forum for Ae or En to ask for help with this... tried to get video from camera to edit [to then incorporate into a cap3 tutorial] but unable to Ae or En to either capture or import files from a seemingly everyday sort of dv camera recording to 8cmDVD].
not trying to go the other way but note your advice in case i need to do that sometime.
    again, thank you

Hi, Joe. It sounds like you have one of those DVD Camcorders where you record direct to DVD, right? If that is the case, it can be a long and difficult journey. These DVD camcorders were not really designed for post-editing. Sometimes they use proprietary codecs to encode the video in their flavor of MPEG. There's all kinds of weeping and gnashing of teeth on the camcorder message boards about this predicament.
Here's one forum that offers some solutions using Easy Media Creator.
    Editing DVD video

Once you get it into .mpg or .avi format, then it's fairly simple to encode it to FLV using any of the methods mentioned in this thread by my esteemed colleagues.

    Hope this helps.

i am also having trouble with video
    am using:-
    panasonic digital camera
adobe cs3 master collection and captivate.

any time i try to import to aftereffects or encore it says file type unsupported.

disappointed because i thought CS3 master collection could do anything [certainly fantastic for every non-video thing i have tried]

    what am i missing?
    regards to all,

    Hi Joe

What are you trying to import to After Effects or Encore? Captivate output? Unless these applications support importing Flash SWF, you are probably a bit stuck. You may need an application such as SoThink SWF to Video Converter to first pull in Captivate and convert to something like WMV or QuickTime.

Sony provides software to edit the movies. Digital cameras are now Tape, CD, Memory Cards or Hard Drives. Output to your computer to edit is usually (not always required).

Adobe makes extremely good tools for editing and they are considered "Best of Breed" by those in the know. Visual Communicator is one such tool. Adobe CS3 includes a video suite that is one of the best.

Suppose that you are just testing this out, not sure about spending the cash for great software. Edit with the included Sony software. Then get a conversion tool to convert it to the tool of your choice. I am using AVS Video Tools from AVS Media www.avsmedia.com

I can convert almost anything to anything. Note that 24 frames per second is "normal" flash. Also note that the YouTube world has a few hundred converters available, but the size may be too small for your needs.

Best of luck to you on this.

What tool are you using to 'capture' the video from the Sony to the
    computer HD?
Whatever it is should result in an .avi or .mpg video file.
Then you can use Flash (8 or later) to convert that video file to an FLV.
I understand there are other products that convert video files (.avi,
.mov, .mpg, etc) to FLV but, having Flash, I've never used them.

And, yeap, you can't edit video in Captivate, so be sure to edit your
video and output the 'clips' you'll want to show in the Captivate, then
convert those to FLV with whatever tool you find.

    Hi Chuck

Video with Captivate is limited to being able to insert a .FLV file. Captivate will not allow you to edit the video.

As for how to create that .FLV initially, you are on your own. You may wish to investigate another Adobe product called Visual Communicator. It's pretty slick with what it does.

    Sincerely... Rick
