Question

An error was encountered while loading the image

Disaster!! After creating the large CP file (120 slides with 20 quizzes), working in it with no problems, and then trying to reopen the file, I get this error message:

An error was encountered while loading the image...

AND the file will not open. I have done this twice, using a while new folder and clearing my cache in between.

What does this error mean... has anyone seen it?? Is it telling me that the file is just too big for Captivate?? I HAVE to do it this way because the LMS will only accept one SCO.

HELP!! This is another fine mess that Captivate has gotten me into... any ideas?

Thanks, QuizQueen

There are several causes to the error message:

    1. The file is corrupt.  If it is, capture the image again, save, then reinsert the image
    2. The file name is reserved in Captivate 4.  For instance, I tried to insert the filename Yes.png into a slide and I got the aformentioned error.

Before panicking, try to insert another image.  If it works, as it did for me, try the above solutions.

I also just ran into this error!  Thankfully, it was a very short file.  I imported slides from another captivate file and I also imported a graphic into the library to use as a background.  The backup file gives me the same error.  Did anyone come up with the cause for this yet?  or how to recoup your work?

    Thanks

Unfortunately, my friend, you are pretty well SOL when it comes to recovering your work. Even the .BAK file will not open once this happens.

Nobody knows why it is happening, but I suspect it may have something to do with either (a) file size limitations, (b) something in the graphics format, or (c) importing slides into an existing presentation.  Or a combination of all of those.

I have submitted one BUG report, and Adobe did contact me and ask me to send them the broken file, but I can't get it out of my server as we are in a real "locked down" environment here. Maybe you can...

Have you tried ARTICULATE??? It works somewhat more reliabily than Captivate.

    Good luck...

Thanks for your input. I did some troubleshooting and mine seems to be related to importing a slide that has an Image Placeholder on it. If I forget to replace the placeholder with a real image, then I get the error message and lose the file. I will send this additional info on to the adobe folks and update my response. I just don't know why it has to crash the whole file though. My lesson was small enough it was easy to recreate. I won't be able to send them a file either. We don't have the option to use other software on this project. But I'll check out ARTICULATE in the future. Thanks.

    Best of luck to you.

    Hi there

Hopefully you have a backup? If so, I'd suggest it's time to restore. And consider making the project smaller. One way to do that is to break it apart. Create segments where you have lengthy demos and make them a SWF of their own. Publish as SWF and insert into a blank slide to replace the former group of slides.

    Cheers... Rick

    Well, THERE is my cunundrum.

I did develop this course in smaller modules, none more than 27 screens long, for this very reason.

But then, because the LMS can only handle one SCO at a time, and the client HATES the way Aggregator looks, I had to scrunch everything into one big Captivate file and put a "fake menu" as the first screen, with "jump to file" links throughout.

As individual, smaller files... each module opens, closes, edits, stands on its head, etc, no problemo. But when I assemble everything and set it up, I can generate the SWFs and ZIPs and save the big file, but it will never reopen.

My only possible work around is to " build" the big file each morning (takes about an hour with all the SCO info and skin and TOC, etc), and just leave it open all day, and do this every day.

This is a TERRIBLE work around, Adobe really needs to address their sucky Aggregator... and yes, I've already requested it.

    But, thanks for your input!

For the benefit of other readers who MAY find themselves in the same unhappy situation, I did think of a work-around.

If your LMS allows you to build a "curriculuum," then you can still load each module into the LMS as one part of the curriculum, and let the learner access the course from the curriculuum menu, instead of as being one large "piece."

For the record, the large size of this assembled file (8.5 MB) cannot be opened by Captivate once I publish and save.
