Audio continuing to play even though slide has ended

I have narration playing on each slide. I edited the audio using the 'distribute across multiple slides' option by placing the slide marker where I want the audio to begin for each slide. I have two issues: 1) a slide will end but the audio for the next slide will play without switching to the next slide. 2) I want the user to be able to move at their own pace, and sometimes the audio will play as it should for a given slide but the presentation will advance the slides on its own, giving the user no control over the pace.
