Best way to carry current/dynamic screen contents to next screen?

New Here ,

Hi All:

I'm not a programmer, so please forgive my (hopefully) basic question.

We are creating a simple "build your own car" app:

• The app begins with a bare chassis of a car.

• There are 5 screens total. On each screen, the user makes a choice between 3 items to add to the car chassis (tires, suspension, etc.) They add an item by clicking-and-dragging it to the car chassis.

My question is, what is the easiest/simplest way to carry the current "state of assembly" of the car to the next screen?

In other words, if on screen #1 the user adds off-road tires to the car, we'd like the off-road tires to remain on the car when they advance to screen #2. (So we're seeking a way for Captivate to remember the current state of the car and duplicate it on the subsequent screens.)

I'm guessing this might have something to do with setting variables, but (since I'm not a programmer) I'm not sure.

Thanks for your help!

Scott

Are you using several D&D interactions? And which version are you using? I see the picture but not the details.

You can time objects for the rest of the project, and then they'll be visible on subsequent slides. But you'll need advanced actions in the D&D setup to make sure that the correct objects (images) remain visible and the others disappear. I'm not sure simple actions will work because they release the playhead.

Thank you Lilybiri!

We're using Captivate 7 (the latest version).

Each of the five slides will contain 3 choices for a D&D interaction. The user is expected to choose 1 item per slide (after reviewing brief descriptions of each of the 3 items)...and drag that 1 item into place on the car.

Then the user moves on to the next slide, where they are presented with 3 new items to choose from (and the previously chosen item/s are still displayed on subsequent slides).

We have learned how to set up the basic D&D interaction, but don't know how to have previously-chosen items remain visible on subsequent slides.

Does this help? 🙂 Details on accomplishing this would be much appreciated! (I have a graduate student handling the programming aspects of this, but he isn't familiar with Captivate so I'm trying to "speed him up a bit" with some expert advice from here!)

Thanks very much!

Scott

Maybe someone else will pop in. It would take me too long to explain all that in this post. This is a user forum to help other users out, but cannot replace full training. Did you watch the video tutorials by Dr. Pooja Jaisingh?

Thanks Lilybiri—I understand you cannot provide full training here. 🙂 Any chance you could just offer the basic steps here (without going into detail on how to accomplish each step---we can probably figure that out!)? I don't think we've seen the video tutorials, so we'll check those out.

Thanks!

All images have to be timed rest of project. Would group images from which user has to choose one on each slide.

For each drag operation (properties of the Target object) you'll need to apply a shared action that hides the group but shows the one that has been chosen. That will be the quickest way. But I don't think you'll find a tutorials that uses shared actions. I do that all the time for D&D actions.

Thanks! You've given us enough clues to hopefully figure it out on our own. 🙂 I appreciate it. (And if you think of any tutorials or even sections of the documentation that cover this, we'd be happy to know.) 🙂

Sorry, Scott, have to start blogging about shared actions. And integration in D&D would certainly be part of that. Documentation?

Thanks! (By "documentation" I just meant in whatever Help pages or user manual that might already exist for Captivate...)

Haven't seen any tutorials that covers shared actions in D&D. Lilybiri was referring to the videos here. This page also explains the components of D&D panel.
