Can you export from Captivate 2 to Flash CS3? Is there anything special you need to do to get this to work?

I just got CS3, but still have 8 on my PC. The export options for Flash are grayed out in the export dialog. Any idea why this might be happening? I was hoping to export to 8 and then save it and re-open in CS3.

Hi jkettler

I'm wondering if this occurred because CS3 was installed. It's quite common when applications are installed, that they monkey with Windows File associations. So my thought here is that assuming the Flash export was working prior to installing CS3, the fact CS3 was installed probably updated some configuration in Windows such that Captivate no longer is able to sense that you still have the older version of Flash installed.

Cheers... Rick

Dublyner about the only thing that might work (which I tried last Friday) is to perform the steps discussed in this link.

I was able to place the Captivate file into a Flash CS3 project this way, but had some errors and some squirrelly things happen to the imported content.

It is unfortunate that we have to wait until a newer version of Captivate comes out for this issue to be fully resolved.

Had an idea, now trying a third-party SWF/FLA decompiler on the published file.

EDIT: Nope, can't handle the conversion.

I'm also waiting on this one. Anyone know if there's a patch or something coming down? I don't even have our Flash 8 CDs anymore, we have CS3 now. Is there no way of getting Cap2 projects into Flash 9?

Rick,
The problem with Cativate 2 is that is didn't support export to earlier Flash versions that were older than Flash MX 2004 and Flash 8. So while the Captivate 2 might not support export to a newer version of Flash than what was available at it's release. One could conversly expect the a current version of Captivate to export to older versions of Flash (in our case Flash MX) since Flash MX was release before Captivate 2). Even installing Flash MX on the same comptuer with Captivate 2 does not trigger the Captivate 2 program to export to Flash MX (the non 2004 version).

The question remains, is there any way to get a Captivate 2 file into Flash CS3 via some other means?

And if there is no way to get a Captivate file into Flash CS3 for editng, how long will we Captivate users have to wait until Adobe releases Captivate 3 that would support this option?

After installing Adobe Web Premium (with Flash CS3) there is no export to Flash CS3 option in Captivate 2. And Flash CS3 does not open files in the Captivate 2 CP file format. Captivate 2 has the grayed out options for Flash MX 2004 and Flash 8, nieither of which we have (we have the older MX version of Flash).

Is there a workaround to get Captivate files exported into Flash CS3? Or will there be a patch to Capivate 2/Flash CS3 to allow for Captivate 2 files to be edited in Flash CS3?

Hi Bennor3814

I'm not sure how one would expect an older version of software to know enough to recognize and offer a way to export to a different product that didn't exist at the time the older version was created. To me, it's like asking why Word 2 isn't aware of Windows Vista.

Indeed, CS3 just recently released. So I'm guessing you are among a select few early adopters.

Based on what I've seen in the past, you shouldn't expect to see any "dot" release for Captivate emerge to make this happen. More likely, you will probably see that Captivate next (we are expecting it to be called version 3) will probably bring this functionality to the table.

Sincerely... Rick

You must be on the bandwagon early to have Flash CS3. Since import of Captivate 2 content through Flash 8 is no problem...and because Captivate 2 is the latest version on that end...I would have to assume CS3 will continue to import Captivate .CP files.

I'll be surprised if anyone else here has had a chance to try it - you might be the first.
