Captivate 9 -Why would caption text not display in film strips?

New Here ,

Why does the caption text not show in filmstrips, but display (sometimes) in the Preview mode? I am trying to edit the caption text, but cannot do so. Any suggestions would be appreciated?

Are you talking about the 'Filmstrip' or the stage? What Christopher shows is making the objects on the Stage invisible, but they will always be visible in the Filmstrip. That should also never have any effect on a Preview, this functionality of hiding objects on the stage is only for editing reasons when you have a lot of objects covering each other on the Stage. As I mentioned this eye button has no effect on the Preview nor on the Published version. If you really don't see an object in Preview (real Preview, not the Play Slide) you have to check the eye icon in the top left of the Properties panel: if that eye icon has a a diagonal line the object will be invisible in Output, which means both in Preview and after Publishing.

Are we talking about text captions or Smart Shapes on the stage here or Closed Captioning of the voiceover audio?  The original post is not clear.

That is what I asked as well.

Let me explain better. The client created caption boxes for mouse actions using default settings (Demo, Simulation modes). The Text captions in the boxes on screen do not present in the film strip, nor in the Preview mode. They do display in the published file. The client needs to alter the Text Captions in the film strip slide by slide. Does anyone know why the Text Captions would not show in development but does in the Published file? I may have to do with transferring across a network, I don't know

This is the Filmstrip, are you talking about this? I still don't understand what you mean. The captions or shapes that are added when creating a software simulation in Demo mode, are normally visible in the Filmstrip, on the Stage, during the different Preview methods and after publishing. Some of them will only show up in certain situations after publishing: the Hint caption/shape will only appear when the mouse is close to the target, the Success will only appear when the user has clicked on the correct spot.

Maybe you should post a screenshot so that we all can understand about which 'captions' you are talking, and which environment (Filmstrip or Stage).

Not the filmstrip then. Now you tell something different: you say that the 'text' is not appearing, but the caption box appears? Maybe they are filled with a script? Can you check the Advanced Interaction panel (F9) to see if the On Enter events of the slides are triggering something? I don't see a placeholder for a variable, which means it is not done with an Advanced Action, but could be done in another way (JS?)

Perhaps the captions are set up on the slides but just hidden as Christoper_H shows in his earlier post on this thread.

Go through all slides and check for those little red X marks against any layer on the timeline.  If you find them, click the X to make the item visible in Edit mode again.  The X just indicates these items are hidden in Edit mode ONLY.

Rod, OP showed a screenshot: the captions are visible but not the text IN

the captions. Invisible on timeline should not prevent seeing it in Preview.

I realise that but one problem at a time. The OP seems to be asking first why the captions do not appear in Edit mode but DO appear at runtime.  To me that is likely to be due them being hidden in Edit mode.  If we can confirm that the captions are just hidden and can easily be shown for editing, THEN the text in the captions can easily be changed as well.
