Question

Captivate 9 won't import or create new file from PowerPoint

Hello. I am using Captivate 9 (9.0.0.223) on Windows 10 with Office 2016. Everything was working fine and then suddenly I could no longer update linked PPTX files or create a new Captivate project from a PPTX that had previously worked.

I am running Windows 10 Pro with Office 2016 (all on current SPs/Updates)

To test I did the following:

  • Copied a known PPTX file to another folder and attempted to create a new project from PowerPoint - Corrupt File error
  • Restored known good PPTX files from backup and attempted a new project - Corrupt File Error
  • Created a new PPTX file with a blank slide and attempted to create a new project - Corrupt File Error
  • Saved the PPTX file as PPT and was able to create a new project with no issue (not useful as a lot of the advanced actions in PPTX were lost)
  • Copied the supposed corrupt PPTX to another machine running Win7 and was able to create a new project with no issue

Hoping someone else has run into this issue and has an answer.

Thank you in advance

There may be some incompatibility with Captivate 9 and the very latest PowerPoint version.  Try saving the PPTX as a PPT and then import.

Thank you, Rod. I did try that as a test and I was able to import a file, but a lot of the advanced items in the PPT did not come over to Captivate.

I downgraded from Office 2016 to 2013 and the issue did resolve. Hopefully, Adobe comes out with an update that makes it fully compatible with 2016 soon.

From memory the latest version of PPT has a lot of really COOL stuff that is highly unlikely to be compatible with Captivate (e.g. the morphing capabilities).

So I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

If you intend going forward into the brave new world of HTML5 I would recommend you DO NOT use PowerPoint as the starting point for your Captivate courses.
