Question

Captivate versus Articulate

I am trying to convince a client that using Captivate is the best choice over Articulate. Can anyone contribute some opinions based on their experience. Also am I correct in assuming a menu could be created by using branching so that you could add .swf's to an existing Captivate course? Basically, this client wants to find a quick way to have an a "mini" limited LMS solution while their future solution is in the process of development.

Any opinions / comments / pros and cons would be GREATLY appreciated.

I like Articulate for 'soft skill' courses as the templates are much better than Captivate which i think is quite weak in that regard.

However what i did do is have a look at some of Articulates animated templates and created them in Flash. I then import them into Captivate which works very well.

Only problem in Captivate is i cant set a page to only activate forward when theyve seen say 4 hotspots on a page.

    Works well though.

Articulate is basically for converting PPT into Flash. Captivate doesn't do that very well (can't convert animations etc.) Adobe Presenter is the equivalent tool from the Adobe folks. Articulate, however (or Adobe Presenter for that matter), does not capture screen recordings (a.k.a. screencasts). Thus, the correct tool to use depends on what kind of content they're wanting to create.

    Hello NashvilleHudson,
I'm sure there are other forum members more knowledgeable, but I'll share a few of my experiences with you.
Mostly I author elearning courses using Captivate, but I have used Articulate too. As mentioned, Articulate basically takes PowerPoint presentations and packages them in a Flash shell with LMS capabilities. I've found it's easier to work with audio in Captivate than in Articulate. So, I'd ask you if there will be audio in this clients project. I'd also ask if the client will be providing the content already created in PowerPoint. If so, are they using effects and animations available within PowerPoint. If so, be aware that not all effects and animations available within PowerPoint are supported in Articulate. I've imported PowerPoint presentations into Captivate many times but none of them contained PPT effects or animations. So, I can't share any experiences with problems that may occur or how well they work.

Another question I'd ask, does your client want multiple lessons within one course available using a menu. Or be able to navigate within a course using a menu. This is one Articulate capability that I must say I do like. Using Captivate you might need to use MenuBuilder and create multiple Captivate lessons.

I'm not sure I understand what your asking, "Also am I correct in assuming a menu could be created by using branching so that you could add .swf's to an existing Captivate course?"
You don't need to create a menu to use branching, and you can add swf's to a Captivate course several ways. Are the swf's you want to add to the Captivate course animations? Another Captivate project? What do they do and what is the purpose of these swf's.

    Just a couple of thoughts.
