Question

Controlling FMR independently of entire project

Hello,

I am still testing out the eLearning Suite so that I can convince my company to buy a license for me.  The demo I downloaded comes with Captivate 5.5.  *As a side note, can anyone confirm if I purchase the currently available eLearning Suite, does it come with the newest version of Captivate?

My main goal is to record trainings for software by recording my screen as I use the software.  I want to follow-up with quizzes after the software demonstrations.  I have found the way for me to get the best results for screen recording is to record by using FMR.

My problem is this:

I would love for the user to be able to have a playbar that controls only the FMR recording.  If I enable the playbar for the entire project, then it unfortunately allows the user to skip the video they are watching and into the quiz slides, essentially breaking the eLearning module.  Even if I hide the playbar on most slides, making it available only on FMR slides, it still allows the user to skip past the FMR slides into other slides they shouldn't be able to skip to.

The only thing I can figure out to do to keep them from breaking it is to allow them to only use the play/pause button and remove all other controls, and hide play/pause button on slides where it is not needed.  However this means they have to watch the videos from beginning to end, and cannot move back a bit if they missed something.

I've been doing a lot of searching and cannot seem to find a way to add a playbar that is restricted to controlling my FMR slides.  The playbar widgets I've tested out just seem to mimic the main playbar, and allow the user to skip into slides they shouldn't be skipping to.

Since the FMR ends up splitting itself up into multiple slides, if there was a way to enter a playbar, maybe through a widget, that can only go to a specified range of slides it would solve my problem I think.  For example if my FMR video is on slides 5 to 11, I would want to have the playbar limited to moving from slides 5-11, but still have a slider bar to control the entire FMR video.

Alternatively, if there is a way of restricting slides from being navigated to using the main playbar, I might be able to make that work.

Is anything like what I'm wanting available, or am I going about this the wrong way?  I find it difficult to believe that my goal is unique, but I can't find any resources.

Thanks,

Jim

Forgot to mention when you need to display the play bar, you need to set the variable value to 1.

    Thanks

    Hi Priyank,

Thank you for taking the time to reply, but I believe you have misunderstood my issue.

I know how to hide and show the playbar as I stated in my original post:

Even if I hide the playbar on most slides, making it available only on FMR slides, it still allows the user to skip past the FMR slides into other slides they shouldn't be able to skip to.

The issue is that when the playbar is shown, the user is able to grab the slider and skip to slides that I do not want them to be able to skip to.  They can even skip to a slide that has the playbar hidden.

Let me give you an example:

Say I have a total of 10 slides, slides 1-5 contain a FMR recording, and slides 6-10 contain a quiz.  I want the user to be able to use the slider to backtrack in the FMR recording.  Currently, even if I hide the playbar on slide 6, the user can grab the slider in slides 1-5 and advance to any one of slides 6-10, which breaks the module because they have skipped into the middle of a quiz.

I do not want them to be able to leave the FMR slides this way, but I do want them to be able to control the playback such that they can backtrack while they watching in order to rewatch something they may have missed.

I am now trying Captivate 6 and this problem still exists.

How can I record FMR, allowing the users to control the playback, but keep them from using the slider to skip into the quiz and break the entire training module?

To test this, you can create a new project.  Insert a recording slide as a Video Recording,  Insert a quiz question, and publish.  When you view the published project you can take the slider bar and move it into the quiz and onto the quiz results which now say that you have failed.

I saw the new option in the Skin Editor to "Hide Playbar in Quiz", but you can still grab the slider  on the playbar in a earlier slide and move it into the quiz.

How can I add playback controls to my recorded videos without the user being able to break the quiz?  I don't understand how others are using Captivate for software recording and don't need to be able to do this.

    Thanks,

    Bump.

I'm only showing the playbar for one slide (the one with an MP4 in it).  I've killed all buttons apart from play, and don't want the user to be able to skip to a slide before/after.

Any clever ways of doing this?

    Hi Jim,

    Welcome to forums.

WIth the current eLearning Suite 2.5, it has Captivate 5.5 however current version of Captivate is 6. Soon eLearning suite new will be launched that comes with Captivate 6.

Answer to your question about hiding the play bar control for few slides is very easy. In captivate 5.5 and 6 there is variable avaiable"showplaybar" which you can use in Advanced action for the particular slide that will help you to hide the play bar in specific slide. Another feature which has been introduced in Captivate 6 for Quiz slides is to hide the play bar control that is in Prefernces of Quiz.

    Please check the screenshot.

    Hope this helps.
