CP4 - streaming swf with preloader percentage working?

Hi,

I'm using Captivate 4 and have a rather large swf do to client needs.  We'd really like not to wait for the whole thing to download before playing.  I understand that this can be done using the Preloader % field, but have been told that changing this number lower than 100 doesn't really do anything (bug?)

Before I tell my client I have a fix for his problem, does anyone know if this setting actually works?  Is/Was there a patch that fixed it?   It's hard to test on my system since everything is local and I don't have to wait for it very long before the whole thing is loaded and plays.

Thanks,

  Lori

Just thought I'd bump this to see if anyone has any suggestions.  Thanks!

We have the same issue--we can only link to the swf directly. So the preloader with progressive download does not work. We tested a very large test swf and found that when you open the swf through the captivate-generated .htm file, the progressive download works fine. But when you open the swf directly, it does not.

Hoping someone has found a workaround to this!

One other bit of info on this problem--we also found in our testing that the problem does not exist with Firefox. If you open the swf directly in Firefox, the progressive download works.

    Hello,

The setting for the preloader works all right, if you deploy the SWF on a webserver or a LMS. I'm not aware of anyone mentioning that it did not work, except of course if you publish as an EXE.

The preloader doesn't work for me, either.  I use CP4 and have tried setting the preloader to various percentages but with no result.  It doesn't display at all and continues to wait for the entire project to download. It's very frustrating because I'm worried that my users will think the video is broken and give up, even though I mention in the instructions to be patient.

All of my projects are placed on a Web server.  I did read on here once about making sure there is a little bit of space at the beginning of each slide when there is audio in order to prevent the project from reading the audio as one long object.  So I tried that, but it didn't help either.  Anyone have any other suggestions?

I've attached a screenshot of my preloader settings, in case that helps.  When I select the preloader, it gives me an option to select from the AS2 or AS3 folder, along with some other preloaders that aren't in a folder (screenshot also included).  I have been selecting the default preloader from the AS 2 folder.

    Thanks!

    Hi there

When you link to the content on the server, exactly HOW are you linking?

For example, if you have a web page with a link pointing to the content, is that web page linking only to the SWF? Or does it link instead to the HTML page?

Or if you have a simple URL that users click, does the URL point to the HTML page or the SWF?

From what you have described I might expect that only the SWF is being pointed at. I do believe you must open via the HTML page in order for the preloader to work. If you are opening via the HTML page, then I'm admittedly stumped.

    Cheers... Rick
