Emptied Cache Files Deleted EVERYTHING

Explorer ,
Sep 03, 2015 Sep 03, 2015

Hello,

I was working on a course when a popup asked if I wanted to delete the project's cache. Said yes, and everything is gone. Every folder that contained a Captivate file is gone.

A couple of weeks ago, Captivate 8 crashed. When I re-opened it, I noticed that CPD folders were now located on my desktop. Not wanting to move anything until my 15 courses were done, I did nothing.

Out of 15, 4 were uploaded onto our LMS (Moodle).

Yes, I now realize (from reading other posts) that both CPD folder or Cache (not sure what it all means) were located on my desktop. I did not change their location. As I have mentioned, after the crash, they now appeared on my desktop.

Is there anything I can do to retrieve  something?  I lost everything and then some.

Many thanks,

Julie

Out of the 30 some CPD files, only 2 remain on my desktop. However, I don't know what they are or what to do with these.

Can you check in Preferences the paths both for projects and cache folders?

They should be different. I did hear about this issue for users with

documents on a networked drive, which is not a good idea. It looks like

you are saving projects and cache to the same folder.

Hi,

Yes, after Captivate crashed about 2 weeks ago, both landed on same path. Why? I have no idea. That's when I also noticed a lots of CPD folders accumulating on my desktop. I didn't touch them, as I feared something would happen.

Well something DID happen.  Unfortunately because you did not at that time understand how important the project cache location is you've ended up in this predicament.

As to why the folder locations defaulted to the same location as your Captivate CPTX files, can I ask if you are perhaps on a corporate network of some kind, perhaps where they use virtual My Documents folders?

Not on a corporate network. But let me explain, yet again, that the default folder or whatever you call it, changed locations when Captivate crashed.

Is there a way to fix it?

The locations of the default Project Cache and Publishing folders are set at Preferences > General > Default Locations in the Preferences dialog.

It is recommended to make sure these fields point ONLY to separate folders on your local hard drive.

It;s interesting to me that about a week or two ago we had another person on this forum report having something similar happen.  For some unexplained reason they started noticing multitudes of cache folders appearing in the same folder where they were storing their CPTX project files.

I'm wondering if this has something to do with some recent change in your operating system.

When you go to the Preference dialog location above, what does it say?  Can you post a screenshot of the Default Locations you currently see now?
