I have a click box and when the user clicks I want them to hear a beep, but not right away, I want to delay it for a second or so (to simulate scanning something). Is this possible?
I seem to remember Captivate used to delete silence added at the beginning of a file. (I guess it still does?) I think the workaround was to insert not-quite-silence. So if you had a clip of narration, you'd copy/paste a bit where the person wasn't talking but there was imperceptible background noise.
Is there a bit of the file you can use in a similar way? (Or do you have some other audio editing software?)

You could just add a second of silence to the beginning of the sound file.

Is there an easy way to do that if I just downloaded a free mp3 file from a sound effects site? Are they editable?

I don't see why not. You can add silence in Captivate once the file is imported.

Great idea. But I tried and Captivate won't save my edits. I add a second of silence and when I save, it goes back to an immediate beep. What am I doing wrong?

Yes, one way to do this is to position the playhead just a smidge away from the very beginning, then insert the silence there. Once you do that, it should then "stick".
