How to copy advanced actions to another project?

New Here ,
Oct 26, 2012 Oct 26, 2012

I am working with a team in which it would be helpful to have each team member develop specific slides and the put them all together.  How can this be accomplished?  When I try to copy/paste the slide from proj to proj it only copies the images, text, etc, but it does NOT copy the Actions.  Can you help please.

Thanks

You can have various team members put together slides with graphics, audio, animation, effects, slide notes etc.  And then copy these into the main project file.  However, variables and advanced actions will always be stripped out during the copy/paste procedure and all object item names will be renamed.  So your workflow will need to change so that final setup of variables and AAs is done AFTER all slides are in the main project.  No other option possible at the moment.

As of Captivate 6, there is no way to do this, as Rod noted. However, in a group project there are some tricks that you can do using a mockup template.

  1. Create your style, brand, look in a sample project
  2. Add advanced actions to that project and get things to work the way that you want them to.
  3. This project should have Quiz Pools, Quizzes, Advanced Actions and any other popups, interactions, Etc. that you could use for your look and style.
  4. You can add placeholders for text, headers, Etc.
  5. Save the project as AAA_Default_Captivate_Project.CPTX
  6. ZIP that file in case you overwrite it with an accidental Save (yeah, I've done that about 50 times)
  7. Start new projects with the Template CPTX as the default file
  8. Use SaveAs immediately after opening the Template so that you can save to the correct Lesson name

Now when you need those advanced actions, they are in there. You can modify the GoTo Slide settings in the advanced actions as needed. This can save many hours of work if you take the time to plan-out your user interactions. Don't worry about the advanced actions that are unused due to a particular Lesson not needing that set of script, it takes up very little space in the file.

I know this is not ideal, but it is better than nothing at all.

Why do you complicate it that much, it is possible to save a file as a template in Captivate 6?

Yes you can.    Templates in Captivate are one of the more "unused" aspects of Captivate, but they have a few benefits, like placeholders that you can use with the SMEs.  I prefer to control all aspects and modify the look as the promary subject (chapter) changes.  I have found that I am not alone in my "control freak" nature when making these things.  A blank project works well for me.

Templates are not as easily overwritten since they get "copied" to the new project when used.  Again, so many people don't even know about the Adobe Templates.
