Import translated text

Community Beginner ,
Apr 23, 2018 Apr 23, 2018

Hello,

My target audience's English skills are not on top and therefore they want to be able to mark any text in the SCORM file (from an LMS) and copy it to any translator they wish. I thought it would be in HTML5 output but unfortunately not.

Are there any add-ons or solutions for this?

Another question!

Except for closed caption, is it possible to import and add text document in the preferred language, so it's visible next to the original English text in the SCORM course? Make it visible on the side or something similar.

It would be easier to translate immediately into the other language(s) but that is taking too much time since I then need to translate and publish to so many SCORM files. It's not sustainable in the long run.

Anyone here who knows something about all this?

When you publish to a normal non-responsive HTML5 output most of the text in the project will become images, so that means it is not selectable.

However, you may have better luck if you publish to responsive HTML5 because the text in those projects will often need to be rescaled according to the viewport of the mobile device.  However, you would need to test this for yourself.  I haven't tried it.

But since creating responsive courses ties your hands in so many areas, my other suggestion would be that, if you KNOW what the main languages required will be, then create translated document versions of the content in those languages and offer that as an optional download for end users that might require it.

Hi Rod,

Thanks for your quick reply!

Since we are not using mobile devices at all, that option is unfortunately not an alternative for us.

We have been thinking about your last suggestion as well, but I wanted to check first if there were any other solutions, thinking about the best user experience.

I then assume there are no add-ons etc to enable this request, in either SWF and HTML5 output?

And no other solutions from anyone else who face similar issue?

I haven't seen any 'add ons' specifically created for this.

I have heard of people using the scrolling text Learning Interaction widget as a way to provide selectable text.  But it sounds to me like your requirement would be for something much more flexible than that.

Additional question, how come output text becomes images?

Is there any settings to not make Captivate do that?

Because that's the way Adobe designed it to work.  Probably because it made things easier back when the main output was Flash SWF.

No there are no 'settings' you can change to alter this pre-programmed publishing behaviour (other than building a responsive course).

One of the reasons is certainly that it made it possible to use any fonts instead of being limited to websafe fonts. Maybe no longer valid if Typekit can be an alternative for you?.

Hi Lilybiri,

It depends on how you mean? Does Typekit from Adobe make it possible for learners to mark the text and copy from the e-learning window?

No, was answering your question: "why text is converted to images", not about marking text and copy (where you can indeed use the Scrolling Text interaction if you can live with the limited formatting possiblities).

Ok I see! You mean the learning interaction Scrolling text.

Is that Flash and if so, will it work in published HTML5 output in LMS?

I remember you mentioned in another thread that on desktop computers it might work.

It is a Learning Interaction, which means it is HTML compatible contary to the Wdigets which  SWF only.
