Is Adobe Captivate 2017 backwards compatible to Captivate 9?

As the question suggests. My company currently uses 9, but we all have a subscription. If it is NOT backwards compatible, then we will need to wait until everyone can transition over. Just wanted to ask if it was.

Many people misunderstand the meaning of the term "Backward Compatible" when it comes to software.

Captivate 2017 can open files created in Cp9 and several earlier versions.  So Cp 2017 is backward compatible.

However, earlier versions of Captivate cannot open files created in later versions of Captivate.  So Captivate 9 cannot open and edit files created in Captivate 2017.  This behaviour has always been the case for each version of Captivate.

That means Captivate versions are not FORWARD Compatible, even though they are all BACKWARD Compatible.

Am I to understand, that Captivate 2017, will not / cannot save as Captivate 9?

That is correct.  By definition Captivate is BACKWARD compatible in that later versions can (go backward) and open CPTX files created in earlier versions.  However, no version of Captivate is FORWARD compatible because earlier versions cannot open CPTX files created by or edited by later versions.

There is no option to save as an earlier version.

Are there any known issues documented anywhere for a cp9 project, opened in cp10, published, and there are a few glitches?

I'm trying to narrow down what's wrong, I've only just started looking into it but I have seen a couple of dead buttons and some screen hangs, this is just from a straight up open and publish.

All works fine when published from cp9.

Not compatible: you will be able to open CP9 files in CP2017 but not the reverse.

No that is what Rod and mysefl already explained:

  • You can open CP9 files in CP2017
  • You can NOT open CP2017 files in CP9
