Margins on text captions

Hi everybody,

I am looking to increase the white space around the text within caption boxes, and assumed I had found the solution in the Adobe Captivate online help (see excerpt below).

The problem is that even after following these instructions to the letter, the margins did not budge, whether I looked at existing captions, inserted new ones, or republished the whole project.

I am using Captivate 3.0.0.

TIA

Titus

Excerpt form online help:

Text alignment on custom text captions
Sometimes text on custom text captions can appear out of alignment. To solve this problem, you must set the left, right, top, and bottom margins.

Each of the five text caption styles requires different margin settings because text appears at slightly different places on each text caption.

The margin settings are stored in a text file with the extension .fcm. You can use Notepad or WordPad to create or edit FCM files.

To change text alignment on a custom text caption:
Using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 3\Gallery\Captions. All of the text caption BMP and corresponding FCM files are located in this folder.
Right-click the exact FCM file you need to edit, and select Open with.
Select Notepad or WordPad.
Edit the following values as necessary:
Left Margin is the number of pixels from the left side of the bitmap to the text.
Right Margin is the number of pixels from the right side of the bitmap to the text.
Top Margin is the number of pixels from the top of the bitmap to the text.
Bottom Margin is the number of pixels from the bottom of the bitmap to the text.
(Optional) If necessary, you can edit the MarginX and MarginY settings. This can be important if you are adding captions automatically.
MarginX is the number of pixels horizontally from the nearest corner to the tip of the caption callout.
Margin Y is the number of pixels vertically from the nearest corner to the tip of the caption callout.
Note: The nearest corner is identified in the file open in Notepad or WordPad under "Corner." For example, Corner=right, top.

From the File menu, select Save.
A dialog box may appear, asking if you want to replace the original file. Click Yes.

Close the program (Notepad or WordPad).

    Hi Rick,

Thanks for the quick reply! I tested it, and your method works ... although, this is is really user-unfriendly. I will file this as an enhancement request. This should be in the properties of the dialog box, and it should work in real-time.

    Thanks again!

Hi Titus and welcome to our community

One interesting little tidbit not mentioned in the help file is that any changes to the FlashCam Margin file are totally ignored if you have already used that caption type in your project. You will need to create a totally new project and insert the caption there in order to see the change. This may require trial and error until you get it right. So you use "throwaway projects" until you are happy. Then you add the captions to your live project.

If you want the changes to be applied to the live project where you have already inserted them, you will need to copy the captions and files to a different file name. Then use them in the project so it brings in the changes.

    Cheers... Rick
