Quiz Success/Failure: How to use Captions instead of Shapes?

Hi,

Vielen Dank!

Whow, I am learning the Captivate German terminology. Textbeschriftung = caption?

This is also a very old and painful bug in the UI, where I have given up trying to have it corrected. I try to explain why I consider this to be a bug:

  1.  The change in Preferences for SFH (Success, Failure, Hint) is only valid for the messages which pop up for interactive objects. They will not be applied to the feedback messages in quiz nor Knowledge Check slides.
  2.  The Object Styles in the Quizzing category still have the Success/Failure captions and you can edit them, but unless you succeed at finding a very old theme which still has feedback captions in the Quizzing master slides, those objects will not be used.
  3.  Quiz Preferences, Default labels still refer to Captions for the feedback messages although they are never used, it will be shapes. This is a serious bug IMO but apparently not serious enough to repair.

So far the only solution is like cheating: make the shapes for feedback look like the caption in the older projects. I see that it is 'Frosted' which has been used, correct? Not so easy to mimick in a shape. Are all the captions using Frosted, this was the Success message, what about Failure and Retry, and eventually Partial Correct?

A possibility is to create a caption with the same size as the feedback message and take a screenshot of the caption to get its 'image'. Go to the used quizzing master slides and fill the shapes with that image, you can still have the text on top. Or make the shape transparent - fill and stroke set to 0 - and put the image of the caption under the transparent shape. Once you have done this for the quizzing master slides, you can reset the master slide on existing quiz slides, and it will also be done for new quiz slides. Only possible problem: if you use Fluid Boxes in a responsive project which I couldn't detect from the screenshots.

Hallo Lilybiri,

Know that I am often smiling or laughing at the translations of Captivate's terminology in French, and now in German. That is the problem when translation is done by translators who don't know the application or the meaning of the terminology (my brother was translator in European institute).

What you now claim is really weird: if you take out the Failure and Success messages in Quiz Properties, you see captions appearing? I really need to test this out (have around 50 blog posts about Quizzing), after some urgent work.

Master slides are part of the theme. Can you tell me which Theme you use? Themes have been changed a lot in version 11.5.

Even more confusing. Default labels (Standardbeschriftungen in German) in that dialog box for the captions (look at the full name Standardstil... but show up in the shapes which are the default.

As for the Master slides: they don't always show the changes in the default labels. Since those labels are in the Quiz Preferences, and I need often to create tutorials in English, French, Dutch, I have a set of Preferences ready for each of those languages to import. Those translated labels will not show up in the master slides, but they will be applied to new created quiz or Knowledge check slides.

BTW since you did edit the Blue Veracity theme, I hope that you did save the custom Theme (using the menu Theme) in a different location of the default themes.

Sure, my bad... you should have to customize and that is too much work. You need to use the first workflow: fill the shape with an image of the caption you want (without the text). Have a look at this example of a quizzing master slide, where I have filled three shapes with an image of the Frost styled caption:

MasterQuiz.PNG

You can now save the theme and apply it to all the projects where you want to use this trick.

Linguistik 🙂 Now I am laughing at the combination of 'tief' with 'eingestiegen'. Understood?

Could you figure it out with filling the shapes with an image taken from the Froze caption?

Deutsch ist manchmal eben eine seltsame Sprache 😉

Ja, das hat geklappt, danke!

Great! Hope you don't mind if I use your 'discovery' in a blog post about the workflow for feedback messages in quiz slides? I will for sure mention that you found that behavior of replacing shapes by caption by disabling and re-enabling the feedback messages. But I want to explain how to make a shape look like a caption, because the shapes are on the master slides.

Danke, Kathrin.

I will not mention your name, but would like to point to this thread. Most users will not follow that link, and probably will not like to view our language switches neither. Is that OK?

Blog post will be there today... I will also show how to use the Object Style Manager as alternative to change the default message styles for the shapes, so that they look like the captions. The Master slides show only three possible messages (Failure, Retry and Success), there are 4 more in the OSM which you cannot edit from the master slides.

OK, I was able to reproduce your trick, which can be used to replace the shapes by a caption? For the sake of English speaking users, these are the steps for an existing quiz slide:

  1.  In Quiz Properties, set the Failure message to None, and take out all other messages (Success, Retry, Incompleete) by unchecking them. The shapes with the messages will disappear.
  2.  Re-acitvate the messages you want, and set the Failure messages to 1/2 or 3. You'll see that the shapes will not reappear but you'll get the default captions as specified in the Object Style Manager, Quizzing category.

If the shape had an edited message (from Quiz Preferences, Default labels), the caption takes over that message for me. You tell me that is not the case for you?

The edited message will not appear in the master slides, nor will the captions appear which is annoying. I already mentioned that is the case also when you have translated the default labels.

Yeah, I am used to this due to my experiences with localising quizzes. At least the Captivate team did listen and added a lot of labels to the Default labels because in earlier versions not all were present.
