Are screen readers for visually impaired able to read Captivate's text animations?

Hi Jay

I'm going to say these aren't supported. Here's why. If you simply add a Text Animation then edit the Slide Properties and click the Accessibility button, the Insert Slide Text isn't available. So I'm guessing that means these objects aren't part of what works in a 508 world.

However, having said that, I *CAN* think of a way to make it work for a 508 world. Simply add a Text Caption!. Make it transparent and insert the text there. Then you can size it really super tiny and move it to an obscure corner or cover it with another object.

Cheers... Rick

Hi Rick,
Good idea to create unnoticeable text. I did a test file with a text caption, and even with large black text, the screen reader did not read the text caption. 508 compliance was turned on in Preferences. Perhaps there's another setting that needs to be turned on or maybe Captivate projects must have audio for slides in order to be compliant?

Hi again

Uhhh, I think I was having a brain fart earlier. 508 requires a few things. First you have to enable it via Edit > Preferences... > Project node > Settings node.

After that, you have to enter the Accessibility text in the different areas.

Here's where I went off the mark. I rather assumed you were editing the Slide Properties and clicking the Accessibility... button and noticing that the button to click and copy slide text wasn't enabled. Duh! I was suggesting to add a caption so that the button would be enabled. But it's much simpler to just type the text into the dialog. I mean, you *CAN* add a caption as I suggested, but since you are typing the text anyway, you may as well just type it into the dialog that is there. All the caption does is make the button available to click and copy.

So the bottom line here is that Captivate doesn't simply automagically present Caption text to a screen reader. You first enable the capability in preferences, then you fill in the Accessibility area for each slide.

Cheers... Rick

Rick,
Thanks for the clarification. This information has turned on the light bulb for me as far as accessible text in Captivate is concerned.
