TOC Navigation in LMS on Revisit

Explorer ,
Mar 07, 2022 Mar 07, 2022

Hello,

Using Captivate 2019, build 11.5.5.553.

I have a course on an LMS that uses a TOC set to Navigate Visited Slides Only. This works as advertised as long as you are in the current session. We just discovered that if you exit the LMS and return, the TOC correctly indicates the visited slides but they are not selectable. My TOC settings are shown below, along side the TOC. In the TOC example below, the first five slides were viewed in the previous session. The Rollover state does not show nor are those slides selectable. I don't think there is anything I can change in the TOC Settings. I'm using the default LMS Advanced Settings. Hoping for a solution from the community as I have several courses set up the same way.

Thank you.

The KnowBe4 LMS does not handle TOCs like other LMSs. If you exit and return, it continues to track but does not allow navigating to the visited slides from the previous session. What's worse is because the module is set up to track slide views, it forgets those slides were visited so it will not show the module as complete when you exit.

Because all our mandatory corporate training is hosted on the KnowBe4 platform, I need to disable the TOC in those modules. To bad because I feel it is and adul

This sounds like your LMS does not support Resume Data Bookmarking.  I suggest you ask the LMS administrator whether this is the case, because almost all SCORM-compliant LMSs would have this feature, however, it might need to be activated by the Admin in order to work.

Not sure if this will turn out to resolve your issue but Captivate has two different types of bookmarking. Having both bookmarking methods turned on at the same time can lead to issues.

When using an LMS, Self-Paced Learning bookmarking should be turned off.  Your screenshot shows it is still turned on.

Can you show us your settings for LMS Resume Data bookmarking?  It's under the Quiz > Reporting > Advanced button.  The Never Send Resume Data checkbox should be unchecked.

Rod,

As it turns out, the LMS is most likely the problem. Our corporate training is hosted on KnowBe4; however, I host new lessons for testing and stakeholder and QA review on SCORM Cloud. This problem is only seen on KnowBe4. It works as expected on SCORM Cloud. To be honest, this it not something I would have checked, but now its part of my checklist.

Never Send Resume Data checkbox is unchecked.

I will try unchecking Self-Paced Learning and report back, but as I wrote, I suspect the KnowBe4 LMS to be the culprit.

Thanks again for your timely response!

As Rod already points out, it is not a good idea to combine bookmarking by LMS and by TOC as you are doing are this moment.

Maybe you need to totally rethink the setup and keep only the bookmarking by LMS? It is possible to control navigation in the course by using custom navigation buttons instead of using the default playbar or navigation by TOC.

Lilybiri,

Bookmarking works correctly; upon returning to the lesson in the LMS, it goes to the last slide viewed and allows you to continue. I am using a custom button set for primary navigation. I want learners to have the ability to review the content as desired. With this TOC problem, they cannot navigate to slides visited on previous sessions.

In the big picture, this is not a show stopper and will not likely come up in normal use - but, as you know, there's always that one learner who stumbles upon a glitch like this and complains.

As I replied to Rod, the KnowBe4 LMS is the likely culprit. I will be reaching out to them hopefully for a solution.

Thanks as always for your reply.

I need to also note that unchecking Self-Paced Learning caused the LMS to not bookmark the lesson - it just took me back to the beginning.
