Unable to Open CPTX Files. Captivate 2023

Hi All,

I previously used Adobe Captivate 2019 and all of my saved projects are CPTX Files. Currently I had to change my laptop and the newly downloaded Captivate is the latest version. With this 2023's version when I open any CPTX files it doesn't open the project and also when I try to open any files through Captivate it shows that it only allows CPT Files(You will find the screenshot attached).

Please HELP!!!.

You will never be able to open a cptx-project in the new version for multiple reasons. That is why Adobe decided to keep both version 11.8.2 and version 12 online within the same license. Please update version 11 to 11.8.2 and it will be renamed to Captivate Classic. Then install the new version. You can only create responsive projects with the new version, and since all workflows have changed compared with previous versions there is no compatiblity between projects created in both versions. I just wished that were more clearly announced.

Thanks a lot. I was stuck with the situation for like 3 working days. As they have updated the logo as well, I got confused that it could be just another Adobe Software similar to Captivate. For the logo upgrade it was quite imposible to guess that classic is the older version. And Yes they must have clearly announced it. Now that I have downloaded the Classic one, it's working fine.

I am pretty new to my position and have never used Captivate before. When my agency gave me access to Captivate it was only this new version and I have been banging my head over the program not even "seeing" the old versions. I have searched this topic previously but was not able to come up with an answer at all. So I am commenting now just to say "THANK YOU because now I get it."

As I mentioned before, it seems to be tough for the Captivate team to communicate in a clear way, which is a pity. I am glad that my answer here was helping.

Wait?!?! You've seen them communicate? You must be really lucky. The only 'help' I've gotten was 'if you don't like it, go use something else.'

You have been very helpful on here for a long time. The Captivate team? Not so much.

Understand that I am very sad about your experience. Know that I have already spent thousands of hours (for free) trying to help other Captivate users. This time it very hard to defend what is happening regarding the communication. Where is the border between marketing and lies?

Thanky you for the tip. I am also stuck as had half completed projects using 2019 version but then in new laptop I only could get the 2023 version and now I cannot use 2019 templates or projects at all. Can somenone please guide me on how to update the version from 2023 to 2019. I gave it a go by going into Help > Check for Upate but then it tells me that I am up to date with the lastest version. Not sure what I am doing wrong, some guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Having license to Captivate 2023 should also give you license to Captivate Classic. These are two separate products and there is not a way to go backwards, but you should be able to download Classic to work on your projects.

You should download version 11.8.2 which will be called Captivate Classic on your system. That version has almost all the features you used to have in previous CP2019 releases. Some have disappeared: Learning Interactions, Slide transitions, all Preview methods except F11 and some more. However you will be able to open all cptx projects and the Themes used in those projects will be ready for editing.  You need to download it, go to this link:

Beware; the structure of the installation files is different compared with former installations. Let me know if you have issues with that.

I need to untangle this a bit... 

So is what  you are saying-- 2019 will update to 11.8.2 Classic, but it ENDS there?  There is no path to push that content forward into version 12?   If so, meaning I would assume any and all projects 2019 or earlier *dead end* at 11.8.2 and would have to be completely rebuilt if they were going to be used forward of version 12?  If true, that's going to create a lot of work for a lot of people... not inconsistent from what we've seen from this product in the past, but still, very unfortunate.

Indeed, that is the present situation. Version 12 is limited to responsive projects at this moment, but even for those projects there is no way to update a Fluid Boxes or Breakpoint views project developed in CP2019 to version 12. Maybe it will change in the future. I don't like that situation neither.

They conveniently didn't make this a very "public" statement.  I had no idea the new version wouldn't open legacy files.  It makes it a little more difficult to "sell" the new version. so far, in testing the new version with a short software simulation recording, the program has crashed and stopped responding about 3 or 4 times.  and during the recording, it just stopped recording in the middle of my workflow.  not impressed so far.

Indeed, I already mentioned this lack of 'communication' a lot of times, feel very sad about it. Result is that I am banned almost anywhere by the marketing people. I am too honest, and hate people who hide the truth.  Omitting to give complete information is very close to lies.
