Why do I need to select the next button twice in order to advance in my quizzes

I have a number of true/false and multiple choice questions in this project.  The user always has 2 attempts to get the answer correct with feedback.  When they are done with the question they are instructed to select the "next" button.  Selecting the next button does not advance the slide on the first try though.  It always requires selecting it a second time.  I have played with adjust the active and inactive durations on the timeline but that doesn't seem to have anything to do with it.  Removing the "next" button is not an option at this point because it is mentioned in the audio feedback for every response in every question. Any ideas?

If you insert a quiz slide based on the default master slide, the normal stacking order is that the Next button is below the Clear button. Maybe you had already deleted the Clear button? Try to use Arrange to change the stacking order.

You don't click the Next button twice, you have to click the Submit button once, and then press Y or click on the slide. If the pausing point is far away from the end of the slide, it will take a while if the actions are left to 'Continue'. Change the pausing point to be near the end of the slide.

The design of the question slides (more details in Question Question Slides in Captivate - Captivate blog) is a two-step Submit process:

  1. User clicks Submit button (don't use the Next button for that), feedback appears with an invitation to press Y or click on the slide
  2. User presses Y or clicks on the slide: playhead is released and the actions specified for Success/last attempt are executed.

The Submit button is the most important button because it triggers that two-step process. Never delete that button.

You are clearly not using Captivate 9. The Next button in previous versions has a double functionality:

  1. During Quiz it is a Skip button
  2. During Review it is a Next button

You can get rid of the Skip button (can be unchecked) if you don't use Review mode. If you allow Review you need that button. To avoid confusion between Submit and Next, drag the Next button under the Clear button which will disappear during Review.

If you delete the Submit button or any other embedded object on question slides (they can be recognized because they do not have a separate timeline) they may not act as expected. If you want tweaks, look at my blog post (link in top).

Thanks for the info, Lilibiri.  I like the idea of putting the next button beneath the clear button as I do think it is confusing to have both.  Will that eliminate the need to hit "next" twice?  Also not sure how to get it underneath.  The next button seems to want to be on top.  I'm not seeing an option to move it to the back.
